Possible start up issue??
« on: January 23, 2015, 04:59:14 pm »
Hi all, I've noticed the last few weeks that when I start my GTI in the morning (it starts every time no issue) but once the engine has turnt over it sometimes idles at 1000 RPM when stone cold before dropping down to its normal idle.. 850ish.

Before it would start at around 1250 RPM then drop down slowly, ive noticed this as everyday I start my car I wont drive off until the revs have lowered to normal.

I would have thought with the colder weather the RPM should be heading more towards the 1250 area rather than down.

I have no running issues (MPG dropped over the last month by like 4mpg! and she takes a bit longer to warm up but that's probably the weather).

im wondering if the coolant temp sensor has anything to do with the idle as I got a feeling it could be faulty due to my gauge sometimes warming up to 75 degrees then eventually getting to 90.

im due a service soon and I will be cleaning my MAF while im there :)

any ideas ?? thanks in advance.

I've noticed the same thing, seems that when its 3degrees or less it revs to around 1k instead of the normal 1250 like you say.

I'm totally stunned and don't know if it should be like this? maybe it is normal and doesn't want to warm everything from cold to quick... Frozen to hot = crack lol ain't got a clue, but yeah it's usually when it's colder in sure

Mines used to do this, and it did puzzle me as my R32 revs to 1000 (which is high idle as it normally idles at 600) when cold, regardless of the outside temperature!

Mine does exactly the same. Any fault codes. Worth reading coolant temp see if there's a difference

no Engine management light on but ill scan tonight and see? I've had her since April 14 and its only recently it started doing this. seems though other people are experiencing a similar thing so maybe its normal
