Low Oil Pressure Warning
« on: January 24, 2015, 04:07:42 pm »
Hi all,

I just went for a spirited Saturday drive in my 06 GTI, and after some hard cornering got the low oil pressure light. Now I checked the oil level before I set off and it was on the low side, but well within the acceptable boundaries on the dip stick. I turned the car off and let it cool for a few minutes. I then drove to the service station and put in a quart of 5W-30 oil, with no warning the entire way. When putting it in I notice a bit of mayo under the oil cap. I put it down to cold winter days and condensation as there is no white smoke and I haven't noticed coolant levels being low. My main issue now is that when driving away from the service station with oil now in the car I gave it a little bit of gas for an overtake and the light came back on. Stopped at the services again and I've got big knocking coming from the engine bay. Any idea what's going on?

Was it a yellow or red oil light?

Probably oil pickup pipe blocked (do a search - quite a common fault)

My mates polo bluemotion has started doing the same  :sad1:

Get it sorted sooner rather than later

As Graeme mentions it's probably sludge blocking the oil pick up pipe in the sump

Red oil light. Had it recovered to my house by the RAC. He thinks it's the tappets making the noise. And the pick up pipe is his main culprit. Anybody know of a decent VW or German car specialist in the Cambridge area where I can get it checked out?

There is an Audi specialist in Burwell, they did my DSG service. Anyone can do it though, it only needs removal of the sump.

I did mine myself when I had the same problem. You dont even need a new strainer as it is all metal and can be cleaned out easily with solvent and compressed air. Mine was almost completely blocked with sludge and I've had no further problems since I did it about 14 months ago.

Thanks for the advice all.  If I have the occasional noisy tappets is it worthwhile getting the car towed, or can I drive it to the garage?

Eugh.  It was the oil pick up, but there was some swarf in the oil.  Not a huge amount but anything more than none is too much for me.  Very annoying as I only bought the car two months ago.
