Bonnet Catch won't close (bonnet stuck open)
« on: January 22, 2015, 08:26:32 pm »
My bonnet catch won't close I've looked around and it looks like a common problem. It seems very intermittent as I can close it with a screw driver a couple of times out of ten.

Looks like I need a new catch mechanism and cable to the spring mechanism and also a spring mechanism housing as it pops open when I pull the lever I have just found it pops open

Does anyone know of any part numbers for these or where I can search for them?

Jack

Forgot to mention the HUD no longer recognises that the bonnet is open...

Get a new catch unit.

Mine was getting to the stage where it was getting hard to open. Tried WD40/GT85 which helped a little.
One day it nearly refused to open. Eventually wrestled it open so changed it before it seized completely.

If I remember correctly it was £50-something. A damn sight cheaper than getting in the hard way!

Had exactly the same problem.

I managed to find a thread on the internet, and it explained how to repair it - easy.

It involved removing Front grille (x6 screws) which gave access to bonnet lock.

You can undo 2 or 3 bolts and lock can simply be removed (need to un hook cable and wire)

Lock can be removed and all the grit / grud off the road can be removed - the lock is open to the elements below  - good luck. I will have a look for the thread and send a link if I find

You can always put a small cable tie around the housing to keep it closed it's also a piece of mind to know it hasn't popped open again. It's easy enough to change. Iirc two 25torx screws on top of the grill and two 25torx screws up under where the number plate is. Then unplug the micro sensor and remove the pull cable. Unscrew the three 30torx bolts on the catch and remove then refit in reverse order. Hope this helps  :happy2:

15 minutes work to remove and refit
also can clean out your existing bonnet mech which is what I did on my old TDI.
