Steering wheel gone heavy after multifunction wheel retrofit

Hi all,

Carried out a multifunction retrofit today in my 2005 MK5.

Followed guides both on here and YouTube and had it all successfully installed.

Only problem is that even after a short drive, the steering wheel and traction control lights won't switch off and the steering has become really heavy.

Also the straight angle on the wheel is slightly slanted which means for me to drive straight, the wheel is slightly tilted.

Any ideas what I've done wrong as I've followed guides quiet accurately.

Just wanted to add that the lights work on the wheel and the functions also I.e volume adjustment and Custer clock control all function

I've not really got any advice as such but on mine you wouldn't believe how long the steering adaptation took when I went from mk5 to mk6 MFSW  :indifferent:

......over  1000 miles  :surprised:

All of a sudden one day I set off to town and I thought.....the steering has gone real light!!!

Then on the drive to town it adapted properly the light went out and it felt great again  :happy2:

Idle the engine on a flat road, full lock one way and hold a few seconds, repeat the other way, centre up and drive straight at about 10mph.
The lights may go off.if not, just keep driving until they go 

Otherwise basic settings can be initiated in VCDS
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Cheers David. I've tried that. Will VCDS sort it. I thought maybe I need to change the steering angle sensor aswell

I wouldn't dare do the mk6 mod. The mk5 retrofit is hard work for me as it is

I'll continue driving the car for abit and hope it'll get sorted

I have had to do it a couple of times lately, unless you rotated your slipring a few times when the wheel was off, there'll be no hardware issue.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.

I think I may have touched the touched the slip ring a couple of times. Would that mean I would have to take the steering wheel off again or will VCDS sort it  :sad1:

No this is normal for these lights to be on after a steering wheel removal. The slipring just needs to be calibrated.

So longas you never did more than two full revolutions either way of the slipring it will be ok.

Have a read of this, if after a few days it is still on the VCDS will get to it

We couldn't spend anymore time on trying that day so I had a long drive home. Then it was another 2wks before I could get back to Leeds to try again with Darren.

But like I say after about 1000 miles it miraculously adapted one mornings  :drinking:

Man the steering is becoming really heavy. We're your steering and esp lights on until the adaptation and did it clear when your steering became light again?

I remember after putting a highline cluster in Maxitrol's car it wouldn't get rid of the lights for ages.
My ED30 never did it either until last week when I had the seat out, seems to be very hit and miss. Luckiky I have a pretty empty car park nearby I can do sllthrse shady manouvres in to clear it

Hi mate, yes it was heavy. One morning I reversed out of the drive and the steering had gone to the other end of the scale. It was so light it felt like the wheels were disconnected  :jumping:

On my journey to town the steering got better and better and the lights cleared  :happy2:

I am hoping that it lightens up soon, it's becomming a struggle to drive.

I have tried the adaptation process a couple of times, also removed battery terminal for 10 mins and still the same. The next 900 miles are going to be difficult
