Phillips X-Treme H7
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:07:36 pm »
Fitted a set of these and they seem absolutely no whiter than the standard halogen bulbs.

Despite being next to my new LED xenon sidelights, they look very yellow and flat. I made sure I definitely fitted them and didn't make a booboo and put the standard H7's back in
Are there perhaps some whiter H7 bulbs that will guarantee me a better look without looking stupid?

Thanks  :happy2:
Pete

Silly question but are you sure they're the extreme ones? Where did you get them from.

There are two possibilities - either the xtreme ones aren't really xtreme or your sidelights are towards the blue end of thr spectrum making your other lights look yellow.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

These ones http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260511709720.

They are more blue and would look ideal with Xenons, but still, I expected the H7's to be whiter and not look so out of place. To me, they just haven't changed at all from the STD H7's.

Would some Osram's be better?

They should be white mate my old ones were!
Indeed fella, something's bit bizarre. I'll take some pics to check the sidelights aren't raising my expectations too much!  :stupid:

I've just fitted osram nightbreakers and m-tec sidelights and IMO the sidelights look fine until the headlights are on. The osrams are so white and crisp they make the sidelights look a bit too blue.
Cant comment how the osrams compare to the philips but im very happy with my nightbreakers.

Bought two sets of the Osram Night breakers yesterday. Fitted them to the Ed30 they are noticibly whiter than the standard ones but i wouldnt have said 90% brighter maybe 30% brighter.

Started fitting them to the Avant last night also - Got one done! much better than the standard bulbs in the avant. Beam pattern with the projectors is much more evenly lit and a lot whiter.

Originally i was going to get the Phillips X-treme powers but cheapst i could find them locally was £30 a set. Got the Osrams for £14 + vat per set from the local motor factors.

I would try fitting one of the standard bulbs back in then compare the contrast between them.

The above link has the beam pattern shown from a Mk5.

sidelights were actually not too bad just make sure you have some snipe or long nosed pliers to pull them out with.

Horrific matey. I've still got 4 separate cuts on both of my thumbs and index fingers. Passenger side took a cool 40 seconds. I ended up being at the drivers side for an hour and a half with pliers and a torch before realising that battery component lifts out! fail

I think I twisted the clips that holds the bulb housing in too so removing them in future should be equal joy  :jumpmove:

Thanks for the advice about the Nightbreakers guys. Will try these after putting a standard HL back in as I definitely want a whiter glow.
Pete

I can recommend buying bulbs from www.powerbulbs.com . Good prices and free postage (usually stuff arrives the next day).  A quick google will turn up some 10% discount codes as well...

Yeah honestly, drivers side can be a mare.
You'll need some gloves of your choice (something quite thick as the edge of the headlight casing is bloody sharp, particularly if you're there pulling on the bulb for a while), some pliers and hours of patience.

The black rectangular jobby (that will be in the way of your hands movement) can simply be lifted slightly then you can either hold it out of its place, or let it hang on the electrical wires. I don't know what it is but it looks like an air con or engine electrical component of some sort? Either way, once it's out your way, you won't believe how much easier it is! :happy2:

You don't need to remove the screws that are located further down it, they're for a different fitment. Again, I did this in my failing way lol but not necessary. Also dropped a standard halogen sidelight bulb somewhere, not found it but never mind.
