Perfect compromise grip and power

I was contemplating a k04, injectors, intercooler and stage 2 for my gti. After selling my evo I've been missing that extra bit of a kick.

I have just driven a stage 2 over 300 bhp and its really put me off, it felt undriveable and impossible to put any power down.

I really like the 2.0 tfsi engine but I'm thinking the only way forward for big power is a3 Quattro.

Hoping someone can change my mind as apart from lack of grip under acceleration I really love the car.

I had that exact problem my friend. This was my old car:



335 BHP, 1st gear.. no point using it.. 2nd gear.. span like crazy unless tyres were warm and road was bone dry. 3rd you could put power down but still struggled for traction if not dry.. This is why alot of people say around 250bhp is the max you need in a FWD car because traction is such a problem even with really good tyres. Also note I had a very linear powerband due to a custom R-tech remap. Beside this, was an awesome car and felt scary fast when it did put the power down.

I now have this:



350 BHP, I can plant my foot to the floor in 1st and it just goes, 0 wheel spin.

After owning both, the golf was more fun i think, but the audi just puts power down effortlessly and is so much faster from stand still as a result. If I own a FWD again I wont be going over 300bhp, its just not practical day to day, not fun when you are spinning the wheels on the moterway because you've put your foot down at 70mph.

I think around 300bhp is pretty much optimal for the mk5 chassis. Yes, you can make it have 350-400 but you are really going to find out that a) you dont have enough grip and b) the chassis just isnt upto taking that much power..

4wd is the ultimate, however over 40mph even in damp  conditions I can deploy 314bhp thanks to Michelin Pilot Supersport's and a linear throttle / delivery mapping by R-Tech.

K04 definetly helps traction with the way it delivers the power over a K03. I found the k03 would break traction as the turbo is so lively in the mid range

Never had wheelspin over 60mph even in really poor conditions

As said already most powerful fwd cars main issue including the mk5 Gti/ed30 is the lack of limited slip diff!
Ive said it before and say it again that the standard 200bhp is plenty enough for the mk5 Gti chassis and even with a trick differential fitted id personally stay under the 250bhp otherwise still pointless!
Many/most of you will disagree with me but deep down you know im right  :laugh: ive been there and done it with big powered fwd cars and all il say is never again, from now on its got to be either 4wd or modest power'd fwd
The mk7 Gti with 230bhp and the fancy diff sounds like a well balanced fwd recipe  :driver:

@Matthewsimone it's the K03s power delivery which make it break traction. . .

K04 with linear mapping and 300bhp is more tractable than a K03 with 250bhp.

I've had both  :happy2:

Diff doesn't make much difference in a straight line tbh (I've had cars wth Diffs). The mk5 chassis handles 300bhp so well, it could be made for it  :smiley:

I've done the same, had a Stage 1 DSG ED30, 305bhp. Used to spin up for fun. So I sold it and bought an Audi S3 8P! Loving the grip and the interior is that bit more classy.

Its fwd and too much power/torque that makes it break traction  :rolleye:
Drive a stock mk1 focus Rs with the trick Quaife diff mate and yes it takes a bit of getting used to but the fooker just drags you round corners no messing about, soon as you up the power like i did to 320bhp and 360 torque = car ruined

Only my oppinion anyway buddy and knew most will disagree simply because they have spent a small fortune making there cars produce more bhp figures but ruined the car in the proces  :sick:

I had a 22b and now my 370hp edition 30 struggles so much yeah round a track its ok but still I'm skeptical about throwing it into a bend, my old scoob used to throw it in and come out on top even if it started to go it was a 4wd power slide which is easily managed.

I thought about making my ed30 4wd and then someone reminded me that Ryan at garage midnight, his golf is running over 600bhp fwd track animal!!!!!

That's the issue I had with the eddy, had about the same power as the R but like they say, power is nothing without traction. Some may say 4WD is boring but until you've actually owned one you don't realise how much better the car puts the power down, in wet conditions it's smiles all day long. 4WD is well worth it IMO.
