Hi all,

I was just wondering who was using what gauges (oil temp, boost etc) and what location you had put them in?

Just had a read of an article in a mag about gauges and it got me thinking!

Cheers,

Tom  :happy2:

lots of options

side air vent , middle vents , over steering wheel , custom pod , 3 over middle air vent , 3 under main console above ashtray (OSIR)
pillar mounted (watch those airbags!)

depends how many you want to fit
consider also whether you want direct lines , or one that have a remote sensor and convert to an a electrical signal
if you want 3 then a combined option (DEFI link unit) is a good path.

52mm or 60mm are the common sizes

I have a link in the product section for the DEFI 52mm boost one  :happy2:
EDIT : added link for DEFI Blue Racer 52 mm Boost Gauge / OPOD Mono OSIR pod inc fitting   :happy2:

When you say direct line or remote sensors - is one more accurate than the other?

I always thought the orginal mk1 GTI looked good with them in the centre consol.

there are adv/disadv to both
I would say the electrical are generally more expensive and of higher quality and therefore maybe a bit more accurate.
but a totally accurate gauge may not be needed , the sweeping action can tell you almost as much if not more....
I dont like digital gauges but you might.

depends on the gauge type too (boost , exhaust gas temp , voltage) all have very different wiring needs.
direct line tends to be easier in some cases (boost gauge) , but then you run a long tube to the dash which if punctures gives you a boost leak...

lighting style and colour are also considerations

you may also wish to consider a combined 'gadget' that may use the OBD port for the values you want if you want it all ?

Received a PM today and Liquid are about 2 months off producing a can-bus compatible system which will give all the readouts you want.

My understanding is that Dashdaq are trying a similar appraoch too.

I have an OSIR pod without the gauge as I'm going to look more in-depth at these two items at the Autosport show early next year.

Hi Hurdy - please keep me posted on the liquid gaage... are there any pre-release pics?

On the subject of gauges, I have the DEFI boost guage.  Fit and finish, and accuracy of read out are excellent.

Downside are cost (as there are cheaper alternatives), and the colour is not an OEM match, plus the light intensity can only be wired so its set to bright or medium.

All in all, I am very happy with the gauge - and would recommend it to anyone - as long as you have considered the aspects outlined above.  :pomppomp:
