Upgrade to RNS - what is required?
« on: February 28, 2015, 02:09:50 pm »
I am considering upgrading from a RCD500 MP3 headunit to a RNS510 Version T LED running V11 maps and a SSD

My car is a 2008 model so I shouldn't have any battery issues I also have highline display with a MFSW

I know I will need to add a SATNAV aerial somewhere - where does it go?
But what else will need doing? Will any coding be required to have the NAV displayed on the highline display? Or is it plug and play?

Before I spend £600+ are there any other versions I should look out for? I am not interested in DAB radio

The RNS510 is a mine field of conflicting information!!
Thankyou in advance for your advise  :happy2:

I'll be watching in on this one too (although I'd like the DAB+) :popcornsoda:

I changed over from an RCD 500 to an RNS 510 and I had to change some settings via VCDS to allow the unit to properly communicate with the Highline display, as there's a difference in how it sends information to the display compared to the mk6. I also had to change a few extra settings since my car comes with the amplifier under the passenger seat.

Was an aerial adaptor required?
Where did you place the GPS aerial?
Think my wife may have sorted me a RNS510 LED SSD Version R as a present although not sure as she is keeping the cards close to her chest!!  :signLOL:

Thought I would do an update for anyone planning this upgrade!
The wife did indeed surprise me with a shiny new RNS510 Version R LED SSD unit so I have installed it

After removing the standard RCD500 unit you will need to purchase an aerial adaptor
I got one of these

Works a treat and picks up all the radio stations
I have mounted the SatNav aerial towards the front of my windscreen although it could go under the top vent on the dash

It did require some VCDS coding although the details of this are unknown to me as a mate did it for a few beers - apologies
If anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them

Here it is sat in my dash!

I have been looking at those aluminium bezels for the climatronic dials. How are they fitted - just pushed into place? Is it a tight fit?

Yep just a friction fit, push them home over the rubber grips and they work really well!  :happy2:

I've just purchased an Ed30 and plan to upgrade to the RNS510

Whats the latest version? Seems to be a few places selling them but prices range from 400-1100!??!
Do these come with Bluetooth?
Apart from the adaptor what else is required?

I got the version R although there are later versions with DAB and DAB+ inside although I wasnt bothered with one of these units. The faff of replacing the roof mounted aerial put me off. The version my wife purchased was from europe circa £400 with the latest firmware and maps (V12 I think), came with a SSD drive and LED backlit screen instead of the older mechanical hard drive and LCD screen.

As for Bluetooth - I am planning on installing a FISCON BASIC PLUS system that will enable music streaming, handsfree phone calls and a few extra readouts on the highline multifunction display.

A small amount of VCDS is required to activate the nav on the highline display but as posted earlier on - a mate did mine and I couldnt be specific.

Leave the standard bee sting roof aerial.  Thieves see shark fin aerials as instant RNS510 targets.

If you could ask your mate what VCDS tweaks need doing, that would be great!  I don't desperately need N, S, W, E showing on the Highline display, but it would be nice for completeness!

Having had a few RNS510s now, my advice is: get the newest one you can afford, but don't get hung up on SSD, it makes no difference to performance.  Just fewer moving parts, so more reliable. The older ones suffered HDD failures.  The performance gains (compared to A thru C models) came from faster processors and software.  A non-SSD Q version is just as good as a S/T, but will be a bit cheaper.
