Anyone in/know London well?
« on: March 04, 2015, 07:06:34 pm »
Hey guys, need a bit of advice from people who know their way around London!

We're going up on Saturday, and I hate public transport so much, I'll be driving as far as I can (from Brighton) before using buses/tubes!

So where's a sensible place to drive to, with reasonable parking?
Then I'd need some kind of public transport ticket - only going from the car, to the London eye and the strand kind of area - then back to the car again.
Looked online last night to get a visitor Oyster card, but they won't be able to get it to me on time, helpful!!

Any tips would be great!

Cheers!

If you are gonna be less than 4 hours then you can park just off the strand on John Adams Street and just feed the meter.

I normally park in Vauxhall area  near the Oval cricket ground SE11 5RD - parking is free all weekend - From that postcode its a 15 minute walk to London Eye.

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately going to be longer than 4 hours.

Around the cricket ground looks good, had a look on street view, I just wonder how busy it'll be around lunchtime to get a space.

Cheers!

I've never had any problems longs the cricket isn't on - if the cricket is on I park at this postcode SE11 5 QZ in Cardigan Street.

I'm always a visitor to London but I find the App (Citymapper) fantastic for sorting my problems out with transport.

As a final straw you can park at Tescos SE11 5 RD I've parked all day as there's no one checking but does have notices only three hours free parking!

If you don't mind paying to park there are a number of car parks just a couple of mins walk from London Eye. For example
:

You can walk over  the Thames on a footbridge to get to Strand.
If there is more than one of you the cost may be same or similar to buying Tube ticket. By the way you don't now need an Oyster card to get cheap fares. You can use a contactless bank card and get same price as Oyster.

Parkopedia.com is a site that maps out all parking zones, restrictions, costs etc. Give it a whirl

That's all great advice! Thanks!

Going to go with around the cricket ground!

I wonder what the congestion will be like  , but least I'll be in the comfort of my own car!  :driver:

Last time we went to London we parked in Leicester square, cost £26 for 4hrs I think it was... The car park was quite secure though and convenient location.

Thanks for all the advice!
Manage to park near the cricket ground, in a nice big end space.

Would've been better if I locked the car though...!  :congrats:  :fighting:

Ironically I once did that going from London to Brighton for a day out. Fortunately my OCD kicked in by the time we'd made it down to the promenade so despite having to make a 10 minute trek back to the car including having to climb all those steps it was well worth it when i found i hadn't actually locked the car...  :ashamed:

Hope yours was ok and it didn't cost you..?
