Buying car with private plate
« on: March 14, 2015, 08:52:39 pm »
Buying a car next week which currently has a private plate... Current owner wants to keep private plate so said he would keep V5, send it away for plate retention and DVLA would send me new V5?

Does this sound ok and I would just take the new keepers form from the V5 till the original V5 is sent back to me from DVLA ?

You need to read this

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/409911/V317_211114.pdf

If the seller releases the vehicle he could cause major problems as DVLA can request a physical inspection!
The owner should wait until they confirm the transfer or retention is complete!

Yeah lot of people do that. Unfortunately I never have accepted this as if they want to sell their car they should of done it all before putting it up for sale. Also if they mess you around then you will have to end up applying for log book and all that rubbish takes ages if they end up messing you around and also end up paying some money to DVLA to apply for log book

I would recommend giving them small deposit and once it's all arrived get the paper work
