hi first time post on here but been lurking a while , having read through loads of posts on here i'm 99% i have the dreaded cam chain rattle , i thought i better get it sorted asap , so during my day off today i had a quick phone around to get some prices , i can't even get those !, i called a couple of respected VAG specialists and both said we don't have the tooling for doing the job and its main dealer job , i was shocked as two of them i called specialize in tuning /engine transplants etc, but then came the crunch time i phoned the main stealer in Telford only to be told in was around 1100pounds to do it , so i was hoping someone on here may know any good companies in and around Telford/Wolverhampton area , it's a 2006 gti
any advice very gratefully recieved,
P.S  the one company i called couldn't do the job but they did the timing chains on the ex's s4 v8 !!!

Hi and thanks for the reply , they were one of the first I tried having used them in the past and they were one of the only ones who would tackle the huge job of the timing chains on the s4 (engine out) , but to my surprise they said they couldn't do it , same with auto precision , quite shocked that highly regarded specialists can't tackle what seems to be a pretty common fault , and from my semi mechanical knowledge doesn't look to hard with the right tools

Try Ant at AP Automotive in Telford. I highly recommend him. I travel from Mid Wales for him to work on mine.

Whats symptoms of chain rattle? More common on certain year of car/engine
Is it a constant noise or just on start up or when hot or cold etc?

Hard to tell really as these Tfsi engines are a bit tappy at time anyway from my experience!

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the replies , yes someone I know said Midland had done one for someone they knew so a little confusing.
The symptoms are when the car warms up , the odd thing is it appears louder inside the car , but when I ckeck under the bonnet the rattling is coming from the right hand side (looking from the front of the car) the cam follower , has been replaced but the rattling continues , it's only noticeable between tickover and about 2000rpm ,
There seems no loss in performance, although at the moment I'm driving it gently everywhere , there is no rattle at all on start up but once it's warm it seems constant.
Love the car apart from that (apart from the stereo lol ) it drives spot on

It's on 110k with full history and a bwa lump

Regards
Gary

I have the tools if anyone wants to borrow them. Lent them to another member the other weeks who's mechanic did not have them.

That was me, and thanks again @dazza

It's not a big job to do in all honesty having watched my mechanic do it on mine.

Any competent garage with the right tools should be able to do it.

Around £550 in parts (including cam adjuster) then labour on top.

Takes around 4 hours.

So possibly a £800 bill on something your not even convinced needs changing!

Cam chain failure seems very rare on these engines
Id sell the thing before spending that sort of money on something thats possibly not even broken!

You are aware these engines do make a few funny noises and have even been mistaken for a diesel in the past aren't you   :happy2:

You may be lucky and just changing the chain and tensioner sorts it.

Im' glad I changed mine.

The chain was stretched and there was visible wear on the tensioner - as for he adjuster its harder to say whether or not that needed changing, but while it was all open, it got changed out anyway.

So now, no more diesel GTi for me!  :driver:

Suppose where you take it, but mine didn't cost me any where near £800

I would normally tackle the job myself as a fairly competent home mechanic , plenty of engine rebuilds and conversions into mk1 and mk2 golfs but I just don't get the time with work commitments, I've reached the conclusion really by reading comments on here  but getting it checked out next week , the garage in question has done a few so hopefully they'll be pretty well qualified to pinpoint the noise exactly, and as a bonus I had a warranty pack arrive today , I didn't realise the car had one  and that job is covered .......happy days

Thanks for the pointers though guys
