noise when staring the car

my 08 plate gti is making a ticking noise when i first start teh car, this lasts for about 5 mins then goes. it only does this on the first start of the day. i can turn it off for a few hours then go back to it and re-start and no noise. only does this when been left for a long time. any ideas cheers

Sounds like it could be the hydraulic tensioner for the cam chain

As Hurdy says - probably the cam chain tensioner.
But ... I had (probably) the same noise just before Christmas, and not wanting a large bill just then, I put some Wynns valve lifter cleaner in. I ran it for a hundred miles or so and the noise went.
I then dropped the sump, put a new oil pick up pipe on ( the old one was not very dirty ), cleaned out the sump, new filter,  oil and the noise has not come back. Fingers crossed!
If it does, then yes, will have to get the cam chain and tensioner done.
Could be worth trying first.

once the Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter has been in for a few hundred miles, do you have to change the oil staright away as serice is due in may so dont want to change it twice in a short period thanks guys

According to Wynns, you can leave it in. So I guess if you have a service in May, no problem.
