car just died on me 2.0 GTs
« on: March 10, 2015, 07:27:16 am »
I set off this morning and got probably 3 miles up the road when it hesitated then went then hesitated and went a few more times and then just died??

No signs of bits missing, electrics work but its knocking when I try and turn it over? Any thoughts on the symptoms please. I'm going to call breakdown and see what they think.

Its 08 plate and 148,000 on clock, timing belt changed at 80,000 by main dealer.

knocking/ticking when turning over is normally battery. Maybe your alternator isnt working and isnt charging the battery? Try a jump start

Battery light would normally be on the dash while driving long before the bettery goes flat.

How fast is the engine turning over while trying to start it? Does it sound like its turning over quicker/easier than normal?

Cheers for replies, it's turning over fine with no battery light coming on.

I've been recovered to the local indi vw specialist, the recovery guy said to try starting it up, while he listened in over the back seat, he can't hear the fuel pump prime when the key is turned. He says its deffo the fuel pump that's gone, which is quite a common fault aparrently?

I'll post back when I have more news, looking like a day off for me today  :-)

The fuel tank pump is the most likely item but it's failure can be due to the tandem pump oil seal failure!
Ask the repairer if the combined pump and tank filter was contaminated with oil, if so, get them to check the engine bay fuel filter and see if it's black with oil contamination!
If it is black and you don't fix the tandem pump seal your new tank pump won't last long!

They did replace the fuel filter in the engine bay as it was not very clean. But on saying that I have done circa 16,000 miles since getting the car, the garage I got it from had supposedly had it serviced before I got it. That was July last year, so I guess it may be the supermarket diesel I put in it?

I'll check about the tandem seal as you mentioned above.

Thanks again  :happy2:
