Castrol Edge 5w40 Turbo diesel ok in TFSI petrol?
« on: April 07, 2015, 11:58:06 am »
Hi all!

Have read its better to put the thicker oil 5w40 over 5w30 for protecting engine at higher temps on mapped cars.

The Castrol 5w40 Edge Turbodiesel variant is cheaper than the non TD 5w40 by nearly a fiver for 4l.

My question is are the formulations different? From reading online not much said but an s2000 forum thinks its got more cleaners to get rid of engine deposits but otherwise fine in petrols..?!

Anyone care to chime in on this?

Hopefully try not to jump into a Millers ND debate

Many thanks

Stick with Quantum 5w40 from the dealer if you don't want to go down the performance oils route. Much cheaper and you get 5 litres too

Been digging around on castrol website and both the TD and nonTD 5w40 Titanium FST versions link to the same product info sheet.

Taken the plunge and got the TD one.. Think its a branding ploy to slot castrol into a niche diesel only engine oil market!

Bit more reading reveals this:

"... diesel specific oil is higher in detergents. These are needed in modern diesels for lots of reasons. Diesels rev much lower than your petrol engine. Therefore a diesel specific oil, as opposed to a non specific oil (oil suitable for petrol or diesel engines) but still meeting the same specs, does have a tendency to foam more in a higher revving petrol engine. I found this out during our testing of a new engine last year during which we bench ran several engines to destruction on different oils. The diesel specific oil in petrol engines gave the least amount of protection at high revs due to the introduction of air into the oil galleries caused by foaming."

So Ill use the TD oil Iv bought im my mums MK4 TDI PD 130 and buy 5w40 petrol specific for mine.

Thanks for keeping me doubting and searching for a solid answer guys.. You may have just saved my engine  :happy2:
