Red oil warning light
« on: March 17, 2015, 05:34:43 pm »
GOLF MK5
Fsi 2004
Hey all, new to the forum but just wondering as to why my Red oil warning light comes up around 25 mins into my journey, car runs perfect and replaced oil sensor, seems to happen when I drop to a lower speed.. Etc from motorway to road, also if I go over speed bumps.. Just looking for some advise as its really bugging me or if there's a potential way to clear the light and mute the annoying 3 beeps, thanks

Maybe check the message displayed isn't related to a blocked oil pick up in your sump

I wouldn't risk driving it personally. Get it to a garage (on a tow truck) and have the ECU read for any fault codes. The red light usually means damage may or may have already occurred. It could be something harmless like a sensor but I wouldn't risk the cost of a new engine. It could be something more serious such as a blocked pickup pipe as mentioned above.

As above, don't drive with a Red light coming on!
It could be the oil pick up pipe - well known problem on these cars. 2 -4 hrs to do depending on how quick you are. About £100 for new pipe, gasket, sealant, oil and filter.
When was the oil and filter last changed? Is the oil old and really thin? Is it 504/507 spec? Filter not changed and partially blocked?
If you can do the job yourself or get it done, I'd start with an oil and filter change. DO NOT use engine flush, it seems to release the built up crap into the system and further block the pick up pipe. (others may disagree!).

Drop the sump and replace the pickup pipe
New oil and filter
job done.
I have a guide in the DIY section somewhere.
Although Imagew*nk have since screwed most of the pictures I'm afraid.

Did the oil light ever come back on after doing this?

Measure the oil pressure with gauge... I replaced once the instrument cluster on Golf MK4 because the same problem. Oil pressure was good but the warning light came up sometimes.
