New to the club - help me clean it up
« on: March 23, 2015, 04:50:45 pm »
So, just bought a mark 5 05 gti :D so, so happy with it.

There are a few things that I would like to get sorted.

The wheels are white wormed - they need a refurb - don't really want to pay more than a couple of hundred -say £350, and all the wheels need doing. Is it possible for this money

The rear badge has a bubbling white weird build up - probably needs replacing - how do I replace it? The badge is part of the opening mechanism, as in you tilt it into the hatch to open the boot.

The exhaust tip is either very dirty or rusty - replace or cleanable?

And finally, When opening the petrol cap ,I noticed the button on the door doesn't work. I then realised that to open the cap, you literally just pull it open withyour nails - the plastic mechanism attached to the cap has been snapped off! presumably because the button didn't work.

Any one recommend solutions to any of these?

Wheel refurb will vary in price.  This depends on whether you still want diamond cut wheels (usually about £100 a wheel) or painted wheels (somewhere around £50-£60 per wheel).  Obviously different places charge different prices, these are just ball park figures.

The boot mechanism can be removed and replaced with a mark 6 one, search on here and you will likely find a 'how to' for replacing this.

Exhaust tips can be cleaned, results will ultimately depend on how bad they are and how much effort is put into cleaning them.  Do a search on here for cleaning the tips, most people advise Autosol and fine wire wool.

Cant help with the petrol cap, im sure someone will have had the same experience and have resolved it.  May be worth starting a thread just for this with the relevant title if no one answers through this thread for a while.

Hope this helps.   :happy2:
