I did mine without removing the carrier, just had to shimmy them around and off they came.

I'd seriously recommend buying the Halfords spline kit, top quality, I put the 14mm spline bit under serious pressure and not a mark on it. Was gutted at first having to buy a whole set for one piece, but wow what a quality kit.

I've got the Halfords spline kit as well, expensive, but good quality, and not much choice on a sunday afternoon  :sad1:

I have the halfords one but with my torque wrench space is extremely tight, we've had the tool stuck on a number of occasions haha

i have both the halfords one and the proper vw one, its doable with the halfords one especially as you don't have rear drive shafts on your gti's, however its easier with the vw one no matter what mk5 golf you own.

good luck undoing them if your only on axle stands as the hight needed to get the purchase on the breaker bar can be a problem with the ridiculous tightness vw do these up, plus throw in a bit of rust and corrosion and you'll be needing a swear jar pretty soon

There's definitely a knack to the angle whilst on the drive way... a nice mixture of Auto Trans fluid / Acetone makes the break torque a lot less for the bar on those splines, but they are hefty buggers and can take some punishment. :D
