RNS510 a mile out!

I've had my RNS 510 fitted at a VW Dealership and they took an hour and a half to install/setup. I thought everything was fine but my sat nav appears to be half a mile out or so.

The screen that shows current position is telling me i'm on a street about half a mile away and when i'm moving thinks i've set off in a different direction. Its also saying 0/11 or 1/10 satellites.

The unit initially said it was in Bury when installed in my car which is where i bought it from but now knows it's in Blackburn so i thought the garage had configured it correctly.

Any ideas? Is it a case of i need to leave the unit on a long time for it to truly find where i am?

Sounds like they have not put your gps antenna into the navi unit id be back there and ask them to check it for you.

As its been off for a while, it might just need 20 mins turn on (stationary) to figure out where it is, and get a full 3d lock on satellites

Agreed, if it's been off for a while or moved a substantial distance since it was last powered up, it can take some time to re-acquire a decent satellite lock as it has to work out which satellites it can see and where about it is. Also is the date and time correct - this helps also as the software will know roughly where which satellites are meant to me at a given time.

Are there any options in the Nav Set-up to reset the Nav System?

If you find the antenna is in place and connected properly, drive out to some open ground where you have a decent view of the sky (360 degress - as much horizon as reasonably possible). Reset the unit and give it a good 10-15 mins to have a good look at the sky and get a decent lock on the satellites in view. Once this is done, it should be a bit quicker at signal aquisition is future.

This is where mobile phone based aGPS really comes into it's own - the phone can use the web to find out exactly where all the satellites should be and acquire a fix much much faster! My Satio is much quicker than either my TomTom or my Garmin hand-held unit.

Thanks for the replies. Here's an update.

I drove home from works yesterday (Leyland to Blackburn - west to east) and my nav said I was travelling from Haslingden to Blackburn (east to west). So when i arrived home i left the nav on for 20 minutes - hey presto - 6/9 satellites and my exact location found.

I then went to mates house after tea - 2 miles through Blackburn - spot on with everything. I drove home again 3 hours later - no probs. This morning i started the nav up and drove straight off on my way to work. The nav proceeded to go wrong again showing me driving across fields etc. I ended up quite near to work in Leyland but again about 1 mile away. 

I left my nav on again when i got to work and just checking now it has my correct position again.

Do other people drive straight off on start up or do you have to wait for the unit to "locate" you before moving off?

Or is it looking like there is a problem with the antennae?

Where exactly?  Do you have a picture of this?

Did you ask the guys who fitted it where they put the GPS antenna? Sounds to me like either you have a faulty antenna (or RNS-510 ) or they have put the antenna in the dash behind the 510, which would probably surround it with enough metalwork to make the fixes erratic/unreliable.

Here's a pic. Someone else has installed their antenna vertically against the back of the vent duct. Mine (red outline) is on the vent arm bit. Both places should give you fantastic results in terms of gps position.

I installed my GPS antenna on the vent arm as well and it works perfectly there. However, I have experimented a little with placing the GPS antenna in other places and surprisingly another good spot for reception was behind the A pillar cover near the base of the A pillar, it was mounted vertically just using the magnetic base to hold it in place and it performed just as well as it does when it is mounted on the vent arm.

Always off a bit? Or just sometimes when under trees or in a heavily built-up area or going through a tunnel?

Another update - returned to VW Blackburn today to check the positioning of the antenna. They've now move it higher to the vent arm position. The mechanic didn't know the antenna was magnetic!

If anything, its slightly worse now  I left the unit on when i got home and it didn't find the car. However i was parked between a car, van and building. I then went to my mates house which is on the side of a hill and left it on. Hey presto - found the car no probs. When leaving i set the nav to take me home and as soon as i set off it said i was going in the opposite direction!

Is it possible to plug the antenna into the wrong plug on the back of the unit?

Is there more than one type of antenna - could i have the wrong one as a new one was purchased by the seller?

I'm going to the RR event in Halifax next Sat and i'm hoping Darren will be able to coax some accuracy out of it!

Mine took about 20 mins then all fine. I'd either get another antenna or locate it up by the rear view mirror.
