RNS510 and aftermarket reversing camera
« on: December 02, 2009, 11:16:44 am »
Hopfeully getting the RNS in the new year, but dont fancy the expense/hassle involved with the MkVI rear badge camera retro fit.

Can anyone tell me if the RNS has a composite RCA and will any aftermarket reversing camera work with it?

Thanks

LYONS,

The best place to start researching the project is VWnavi.com.

AFAIK or remember VW did do a standalone RGB camera. But its more complicated than you think. The OEM MK5 badge camera unit has the control unit (which coverts the RGB signal into something the RNS-510 can understand) built into it. This is one of the reasons why its massive and requires one of the wiper arms to be removed.

You COULD, go down the Passat camera badge route which doesnt require any cutting of metal, but you will need a seperate aftermarket control unit box (kufatech.de best place for this) and at present the box's dont support the guidelines you see on the RNS display.

Thanks. I did have a quick search on vwnavi, but to no avail. Ill maybe put up a thread and see what happens.

I was initially tempted by the price of the aftermarket cameras, but if it turns out to be as dear as the badge job ill probably forget about it!

A while I did a summary of all the costs involved in doing the OEM MK5 badge. If I remember it was very similar to the £300 mark that most stealers want for park distance control!   :signLOL:

My car doesnt get washed too often so i need my rear wiper though sadly.

Can OEM parking sensors be retro fitted by VW? My mother in law got sensors retro fitted to her C Class but they're very much non Mercedes as theres a wee display thing in the rear window.

The rear wiper still works, you can still keep it fitted. Infact most people have not noted any difference ater they've hacked off one of the support arms.

Yes, but check with your dealer before hand that they will be using VW parts and not just passing your car onto an outside specialist (some dealers do this as they dont have anyone in-house with the skills or that they think its not profitable)

One interesting fact is that assuming they use VW parts they actually use a kit which is retro-fit to a number of VW's. The part number is the same for Polo's/Passat's/Touran's etc.

Ahh, i assumed the wiper bcame redundant. Might still be on the cards for the coming months then.

Dont suppose you know how much the sensor retro fit is?
