Fuel smell in oil
« on: March 24, 2015, 08:03:45 pm »
So checked oil today and can smell fuel from dipstick.

I'm running stage 2+ setup without a map atm (at rtech on 16th April) so I think it might be running rich.

Plan is to get an oil change done before the map and watch closely

Iv got a loba hpfp fitted with a new cam follower so I wouldn't of thought It was a leak but how can I test for a leak on the hpfp?

Take it you renewed all the seals when fitting your HPFP?

Think (no 100%) there's a gasket type rubber seal around the position where the fuel pump bolts to the cylinder head. Highly unlikely, and as you mentioned the lack of correct mapping is likely the cause.

I thought the fuel smell was normal.  :scared:

A little smell of petrol isn't bad and is normal, but stronger smells aren't.

Nah no gasket came with loba and not one present on oem unit. The black seal would stop it leaking externally but it's more on the piston that it would leak....

Iv read mixed things on fuel smell in oil. Some people say it's normal some say it's not!

Is the oil level rising?

 I said something useful... Bloody hell!

Fuel in the oil is fine, it can't ignite due to the lack of combustible oxygen within the engine and pressures, but will most likely evaporate away and be filtered out by the PCV system. Keep an eye on oil levels both before and after a remap and if the smell persists strongly after a map, seek professional guidance from R-Tech/AKS Tuning or other reputable garages.

Fuel should not be in the oil. It is not fine. PCV won't filter it out either. Fuel in the oil will cause excessive wear if not sorted quickly.

Is it fuel smell (with diluted oil) or a combustion smell? Combustion smell is normal, my oil stinks of combustion (exhaust gas smell)

Ah, that may be where I was going wrong! I can smell something but it's not fresh fuel in my oil. Scrap what I said then, get it checked out!

I'm guna keep an eye on it as it had just been for a 100 metre drive round camp so am hoping that at with the lack of a remap could lead to excessive feeling. I'll keep checking levels in next few days and get some fresh oil in if low.

Btw @th3_f15t  excessive fuel in oil can cause it to thin and will end up causing damage to engine because lack of lubrication, just so you know  :happy2:

Cheers mate. Didn't think petrol would affect oil but there you go, every day is a learning day...
