best remap???
« on: March 29, 2015, 10:02:20 pm »
Hi guys, Just got myself my gti around 1 month ago and think it needs a remap. I will only be doing stage 1 as I don't think its worth going any further at this stage, I'm not thinking to spend more than £500 on a 9 year old car.
But I also need help on deciding if I should get the engine and dsg remapped or just the engine.
My research so far shows R-Tech is the most recommended but seems mostly because of the high price of revo. I would like to have R-Tech stage 1 but they are just too far from me, I live in North London.

So what would you recommend for a mk5 gti dsg k03?

R-Tech? Revo? Bluefin? Shark?

R-Tech get better praise over some other tuners, not just because of the cheaper price, but because the service is more personal - its not just a quick plug in laptop, flash the map & go, you get a health check, dyno run and bespoke tuning to your exact setup / cars potential. it takes 2-3hrs to do it properly, so its great value for money.

you also get the following included within the price:

- Traction control mapping (makes traction control useful)
- switchable maps
- Dyno print outs
- Linear throttle map (if you want it)
- Mapping using VVT and removal of ECU torque intervention - allowing smoother delivery

There really isnt anything "wrong" with Revo, Shark etc at all, theres loads of cars on here mapped by them. Just remember that if you disconnect the battery for any reason, the Revo settings are lost and the car goes back to standard-ish. You need to return to your local revo installer or buy and SPS switch (£150 IIRC) to reinstate the settings.

As you can probably appreciate you arent the first person to ask this question, so read all the reviews and make a decison for yourself, looking at what is important for you (location, price, extras etc)

We all have our favourite tuners on here so the next guy will probably say APR or Revo have done him well. . . .

My advise is - Whatever tuner you go to, make sure its a well reviewed tuner discussed on the forum, dont be tempted by a local place offering £150 remaps - it always ends in tears  :happy2:

Just got mine MK5 GOLF GTI AXX K03 remapped by R-Tech. Love it !

Even after the 3 hour drive there and 3 hours back, it was still cheaper than REVO.
Even got to have a little nap on the sofa! and a chat to Nikki about how he does it all (being an IT geek myself)

As above have a look through the last rolling road, and the R-tech VS other maps.

There is no replacement for displacement....
But a turbo does help....

Just called R-Tech apparently the remap guy (Ben) is off for the day. Gonna call back tomorrow hope I can get a booking before the weekend. I am thinking to get custom remap both engine and dsg any idea on how much that will cost?

I've always wondered how comes some remaps are better than others, Like they say on this forum that Revo is more aggressive than R-Tech but R-Tech delivers a smoother ride is it not just code that can be replicated?

Yup, Already decided to go with R-Tech. Just need to find a time slot that wont get me stuck in traffic on my way back so I can test out the newly added power  :driver:

Niki can do aggressive if you want aggressive. . .

Map is totally bespoke, I asked for linear delivery. James (former member on here) asked for a brutal map which spun the wheels in 4th gear at 30mph  :signLOL:

Are you happy with your linear map or now want something more aggressive?
Which one gives the most performance from a 0-60 linear or aggressive?

I've always had astras in the past so fuel was never a worry for me, but now is starting to be a issue with how much the gti burns. Though still I would rather have max performance from a stage 1 than try make it a economical car. I top up £40 Vpower and it says 220miles on the dash but only lasts for around 100miles before its giving me the warning at 30-35 that's normal though right with this being the first turbo car I've owned I cant stop flooring it

I went linear to aid traction. It's still VERY fast on the road, it's just doesn't dump a load of boost like my mates Revo mapped Leon Cupra. Feels very OEM like in delivery, as if the car had come out of the factory with this map

I don't know how linear you can get with a K03, as that turbo needs a decent spool to get good results, I think most people just ask for max power  :signLOL:

thanks for all that info think I'm gonna go for a more aggressive remap from R-Tech and maybe a dsg stage 1 remap too if they recommend it.
Looks like you're selling your ed30 just out of curiosity whats the next car gonna be?

They also do switchable maps, so u can have a nice stock feeling car, but turn it off and on to a different mode, harsh.

Nikki is in to coding his own type of maps (custom), so he can make it sing a tune if you want.... (don't quote me on that as the ECU only has so much memory)

OK now this sounds good  so I can have 3 maps stored and can switch with a flick of a button ? I can have stock, economical and sports map presets? Please tell me that's what you meant cause that will definitely be worth a lil extra.

AXX is my engine code. Should be on the block, or under the carpet in the boot, next to the spare wheel.

Drop them (r-tech) an email, but i've got 5 maps on mine 5 being all out, for my mods, and 1 being nice a gentle.
You can't switch while driving (with R-Tech, tho do correct me someone) with mine you go stage 2 ignition. Then press and hold the break and press the accelerator to switch maps, the Rev counter than shows which map you have changed to.

Not sure how the different maps affect the MPG, as your right foot is the main affect to that....
