Re: GTI-Rog's Mk5 GTI ED30 Valance Fitted & hazard switch.
« Reply #75 on: September 08, 2015, 02:45:02 pm »
I haven't done much to the Golf lately, until now, that is

First little update. Install the new Hazard switch.

P1040916 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

The next update, is slightly better and bigger

I managed to bag, for a great price, an upgrade part for the Golf.......large parcel arrived yesterday.

P1050039 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

All unwrapped! An edition 30 rear valance already in Diamond Black Magic paint code!
Been searching for ages and this popped up on eBay.

P1050040 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

It has a bit of surface damage, which should machine polish out ok. looks rough here though!

P1050041 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Ok, onto the install. This isn't exactly a guide, but it may help someone?
The standard GTI valance, looks ok but I prefer a colour coded valance.
I needed to remove the whole rear bumper to be able to separate the bottom half and replace with the Ed 30 Valance.

P1050043 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

First I removed the screws in the wheel arches.

P1050044 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Then I removed 4 screws from under the edge of the valance.
Followed by removing the rear lights, this is to gain access to the next 4 screws holding the rear panel on the car body.

P1050045 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Lights removed, to remove these bolts. Quite filthy behind there isn't it!

P1050046 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

And after a bit of faffing with a couple of reluctant screws, it was off!

P1050049 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

I gave the area a good clean, not perfect but better

P1050050 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

The old valance was pulled off carefully, not to damage any lugs.
The Ed 30 valance was then pushed back onto the rear panel, and being a genuine part, it fitted perfectly! It was then fitted back on to the car.

P1050052 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

I hand polished the Valance with Scholls Concepts S3 polish to knock back the scratches and painted out the worst of the deeper scratches.

I will follow up with a machine polish.

P1050053 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

All installed and looking great after a wipe down with Maguires Quick Detailing spray.

P1050054 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

P1050055 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

The colour match is very good too, I'm well happy!

P1050056 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Bad ass!!

Still need to find a towing eye cover though!

P1050057 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Loving the look of the car, but I will continue to find parts to improve the car, so the next will be the Ed 30 front splitter.....watch this space.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Looks well.

My only gripe is the positioning of your number plate!

Yeah, I know, all in good time

Looks well.

Thanks Lyons

I had noticed, but that's where the previous owner had screwed in the plate :fighting: :stupid:

That will addressed when I get some new plates and surrounds.

Looks great Rog! I fitted the Ed30 bumper on mine a few months back too. Couldn't wait to get rid of the standard bumper.

Cheers Jay, you should put some pics up of yours :happy2:

It is amazing how much better it looks, makes the car look more premium in my eyes

I'll keep the standard valance just incase, this one gets damaged.

I've also managed to find a towing eye cover, in black too, so I'll be fitting that to finish it off nicely

Ed30 valance looks great!

I got the tow eye cover from VW for about £18, it just needed to be painted.

I'll get the part number later for you.

Thanks for that Rossimac!

I did get one from eBay already painted, turned out he sent the wrong part number :stupid:

I was trying to get away with not painting it, but I suppose I'll have to now haha

Cheers for the part number  :happy2:

Re: GTI-Rog New ignition barrel surround and replace indicator lens.
« Reply #86 on: October 03, 2015, 01:38:29 pm »
Outstanding work!

Thanks Ash,  :happy2:  I'm chipping away at it

Little update

A few more improvements made.

First really simple and popular add-on, £3 from eBay, an Ignition barrel surround. I chose aluminum to match the interior.

P1050163 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Then the next little fix, was to replace the indicator lens. As you can see, it's seen better days

P1040125 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Here's a little "guide" for anyone who needs it.

Firstly, remove the cap. Gently pull outwards from bottom and it will start to come away, be carefull not to snap anything!

P1050165 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Then the mirror, I used a small screwdriver to ease it off from the inside, very easy.

P1050166 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Disconnect the power terminals.

P1050168 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Then your're left with the motor. Then remove the 3 screws around the outside to remove the motor. to gain access to the rest of the screws, you need to remove.

P1050171 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Leaving this.

P1050174 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Next, simply undo the screws and push the lens out.  Then disconnect the cable to the indicator.

P1050176 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Your're then left with this "mess"

P1050178 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

New genuine, replacement part.

P1050179 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Reconnect the cable.

P1050181 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Re-assemble and remember to connect these terminals up.

P1050183 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Mirror pushed back on.

P1050184 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

And all back complete

P1050187 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Took me less than 15 mins, not bad considering I have'nt done one of these before!

Next up the Tailgate latch  :happy2:

Re: GTI-Rog Replace White wormed Tailgate latch
« Reply #87 on: October 03, 2015, 02:09:49 pm »
Next job....replace the WW (white wormed) tailgate latch..

Again, not teaching people to suck eggs, but hopefully my little "How to" might help or inspire someone to do theirs'

Obviously a common sight on most early Mk5 Golfs :fighting:

P1050191 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

This is the replacement, from a 2008 Golf. £20 off Ebay again! It has a 3D logo but not the soft closing action. But I'm not too bothered by that.

I've already given it a good clean and polished the chrome with Britmax Easy Cut.

P1050188 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

To fit the replacement I need to remove the tailgate plastic panel. This is always a worrying time as it is usual to break a few clips!

P1050192 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

First, you need to remove 2 screws from inside the grab handles.

P1050193 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Then I masked up the edges of the tailgate, to get a screwdriver in between the plastic, to help pull the panel off. So after some grazed knuckles and alot of pulling, swearing and more pulling, it came off....and without breaking any clips... woohoo!!  :jumpmove:

P1050194 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Then it's on to removing the old latch.

P1050195 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Disconnect the cable (remembering not to close the tailgate as you can't open it again from the outside!)

P1050196 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

To gain access to all the screws I needed to remove/move the wiper motor. This became hard, as it would not budge!!

P1050197 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

So, I just removed the wiper motor bolts (10MM) and pulled it down a little to gain access..

P1050199 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

...to remove this torxhead screw (T25).

P1050200 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Remove the old latch and voila..

P1050202 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Install the new replacement. Re-fit is the reversal of removal. Easy

P1050203 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

All done!

P1050205 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

Close up, after dressing with Gtechniq C4, to retore the black centres. I may stick something in them anyway.

P1050206 by Roger Freeman, on Flickr

I am happy with how it looks now, much smarter IMO.

Thanks for looking  :happy2:

It's come leaps and bounds mate! Lovely job
I might be replacing my boot handle today but thinking about removing the chrome bit and painting inlay part of it to match my car and stick the chrome back on!
