^^ just to clarify.

Timing belt and tensioner is one thing.

Cam chain and tensioner is something else.

Cheers. In my service history -it just says toothed belt with a tick in the box - is this a timing belt or a chain?

Timing belt. (on the left side of your engine as you look at it)

Timing chain is on the right behind the fuel pump.

The ticking is normal. Its the chainy diesel sound you have to worry about. Its hard to tell from these audio clips but i do think it sounds better.

@Peskyjones you have a belt and chain.

@cnut As rich said Some engines have failed due to the chain/tensioner. Usually the AXX engines i believe.

Cheers guys. So is the timing belt also known as a cam belt?

Why do I have a timing chain as well as a timing belt? Do they do different things? Does the timing chain need changing after X miles like the timing belt does? Such a noob.

I don't think the cam chain is a serviceable item to be changed in x miles.

Worst case scenario.

You dont... you have ...

a timing belt.... Which links the crank shaft to the exhaust cam

a CAM chain... which links the exhaust cam to the inlet cam.

that looks like a pretty bad scenario to be in! Probably safe to say that mine hasn't had them changed then unless its in an invoice, which it isn't. Think I'm going to have to get them done at some point, but I've already got a long list of things that need doing first

Guess i'll have to fit it in somewhere, but seeing as it its not making the diesel noise (judge for yourself on first page) It can wait a while. Maybe on the list for later this year/early next year.

The cam chain/tensioner is not cheap to get done especially if you end up getting the adjustor changed as well.

I don't really want to advise you to spend money if you don't have to.

Here is a good one to have a listen to. Ignore the tapping this is normal. It sounds less like a diesel in the second clip.

I'd say mine doesn't really sound like either of those, but don't think it is as bad as the first clip. Hopefully it's fine - just high mileage without replacement is worrying me

Is the ticking a high pitched ticking? I'd say I can hear a seperate ticking quote prominently which is sperate to the injector tick

@dazza your becoming a real guru on this subject now fella!

All I'll say on this subject is, I had dieseling sound from engine, so much so I could hear it inside the car with the doors shut.

So changed the cam tensioner, chain and cam adjuster. Now all is lovely and quiet, no embarrassing diesel noise for me.

I would say, if you can hear the diesel sound from inside your car, get the parts changed. If you cant leave alone.

Dazza helped me a lot with advice on mine, listen to what he has to say

So much for keeping it standard!

@GTi-Andy Thank mate happy to help out fellow members.  :happy2:

@Peskyjones I was exactly the same as you at first concerned about the ticking noise. Even after changing the cam chain, tensioner and adjustor it still ticks. You need to forget about this its normal. Most of the ticking i have is from the HPFP so i'm keeping an eye on the cam follower.

As Andy said its the diesel sound that you have to worry about. Can you hear this in the cabin?
