Ticking/tapping sound from drivers footwell (edition 30)
« on: March 10, 2015, 02:11:24 am »
Hi guys...  I have been  getting a tapping/ticking sound which lasts about 5 seconds then stops then happens again but there doesn't seem to be a pattern...  It happens under the wheel toward the footwell. Its like water torture as I just listen out for it now...

Anyone had similar...? I am sure I have heard the same coming from the passenger footwell too

Are you sure it's not the fuel pipe rattling round underneath the car? Common issue

I get a clicking sometimes, got a fault code which relates to the ignition switch.
When I've googled it a few other people have the same code with clicking.

It is probably a heating flap motor, every single mk5 based car I have had does it
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Oooof so could be one of a few things...  Is there a proven fix for the fuel line rattle?
It does sound like it's around the knee area to be honest and quite clear..

Lift the bonnet, look to your left had side and you will see the two plastic fuel pipes coming out of the bulkhead, just give them a small tug and that'll stop the rattle if it's the fuel line rattle that your experiencing under the floor pan

Definitely fuel line rattle.

The cure is to jack it up, drop the plastic floor pan liner, pack the fuel lines with some kind of foam.  I used the grey pipe lagging foam from B&Q.  Shoved a load of that in the cavity around the lines and has been silent ever since.

Just need to sort the hissing (leaking) brake servo next.

You don't need to go to that extent, just either tug or push the fuel line in the rubber grommets under the bonnet and the rattle will stop.

Cool if that works, but it didn't for me. The noise came back after a while.  If you do as I describe, you can see how loose the fuel lines are inside the box section, so it's just a matter of time before they move back into a position where they can tap on the box section again.

this has bugged me on mine for months. I thought it was the ipod hard drive in the glove box at first but it is a tap tap tap, in bursts then will stop.
