Thanks mate! From what I was told from a fellow track day friend, who uses them on his Megane RS with 370 BHP, they're the best he has used so far considering the cost. He puts them at almost the same level of the more expensive Endless and Project Mu.

They don't look much like they were before. Now they're stripped from unneeded parts for race use. :laugh:

Found this flying lap video from 1991 of Schumacher's qualifying lap at Estoril. The circuit has more tight corners nowadays. :smiley:

Passat aluminium front control arms and ball joints fitted today! The aluminium control arms are half the weight of the iron cast version (4 kg vs 2 kg). :smiley:

Last 8th of April I went to my 4th track day at Estoril. It was an hot day and for the first time I took my new track wheels and track tyres. :smiley:

I was allowed to go on one of the Advanced classes so I knew I'd have well prepared cars on track with me. As usual I always let the fast ones pass when they got near me, because I don't like to make others waste their time. :smiley:

The 3rd session with the help of a former pilot. What a great and fun experience this was! :grin:


The best lap recorded of the day happened on the last session with no co-pilot. I could have done better, though. Next time, I hope!


I had to learn on the first two session what was the correct tyre pressure to use with these tyres. The best handling was achieved with 1.7 bar on the fronts and 1.8 bar on the rears when cold. With that pressure they reached at least 2.2 bar when hot.

The rear camber was too negative at -2.5º compared with the front that was only around -1º. I had trouble making the rear slide a bit to help turning the car on the tighter corners. Reducing the front tyre pressure from 1.8 bar to 1.7 bar helped a bit. If I want the car to handle properly, I'll need adjustable top mounts (since I can't fit adjustable ball joints due to rubbing on the brake discs) and maybe a stronger rear ARB. Another option would be coil overs with adjustable top mounts...

The new Carbotech XP20 pads are really aggressive and unfortunately I could only get them fitted the day before using them on track. I guess I also didn't follow well Carbotech's instructions on how to bed them on track. By the 3rd session I could notice some vibration from the discs under hard braking due to pad deposits. At the 4th session the vibration was really bad. :doh:

I've ordered new discs, this time from Brembo since they were a 20% cheaper than the ones from ATE (got pricier at the moment). Lets see how these compare to ATE's that I liked. If I had the funds available I'd order fully fluctuating discs...

Well, that's it. Love going on track with my car. It's really addictive! :driver:

Not sure if this happened to anyone else but my front TD wheels centre caps melted. One fell off during the 3rd session and the other broke when I took it off to return the wheel to my 4 wheels stand. :signLOL:

I guess the brake discs got really hot this time. The OZ have carbon fibre centre caps, so they should be more resistant to high temperatures.

Ordered an under brace bar from Addiction Motorsport and fitted it yesterday:





Now I'm waiting for R-Tech to have their rear brace bar available to order one to complete the chassis reinforcement. :smiley:

i always remove centre caps when on track

the chances of losing one or as you have found out melting one its just not worth the risk

Much has happened since my last update. After the track day in April when I went to replace the Carbotech XP20 pads for the EBC Redstuff for road use, I noticed some problems with the external pistons of the Brembo calipers. The heat from the race pads burned the pistons that are made of a resin, not like the internal that are from aluminium and were like new.

So I had to get the calipers refurbished and the pistons replaced for new ones made of aluminium. Here are the pictures of the work done:

Good call on carbotech though. I have XP10's on my track car. Can be noisy on the road, but they're great on track. I can only imagine how good the XP20's are

From what the refurb tech told me the outside pistons are lighter to compensate from being further from the oil brake line plug. When pressing the brake pedal the inside pistons being nearer would start to move sooner. I don't know. I've used the calipers with only aluminium pistons and I haven't noticed any difference when braking. It was a bad surprise when he told me that the outside piston were damaged because they weren't made of aluminium like the inside ones. :sick:

Later I finally received the rear brace bar from R-Tech. I chose the black version to go with the black interior so it's more discrete. I didn't take any picture yet and I didn't unwrap the package before the install. Waited +2 months to get it. :surprised:

Got the parts needed for the annual service and booked with my mechanic to get it done before the next track day.

Work done by my mechanic:
-Changed the engine oil (Millers Oils CFS Nanodrive 5w40 NT) and oil filter (OEM)
-Replaced the cam follower (OEM), HPFP seal (OEM) and the HPFP bolts (OEM)
-Oil catch can clean
-VWR intake canister clean
-Fitted the Brembo 18Z calipers with the Carbotech XP20 pads
-Fitted the ATE 350 mm that I had previously skimmed to remove the brake pad compound
-Changed the brake oil to Castrol React SRF Racing
-Fitted the R-Tech rear brace bar
-Adjusted the front Koni Sport dampers to decrease understeer

Due to lack of time he didn't have time to adjust the rear dampers.

This is the used cam follower with almost 15k miles:
