MFD2 - iPod connection
« on: April 10, 2015, 09:16:45 am »
Hi,

Just wondering if there is anything I can buy or use to play music from my phone through the Satnav unit?

Getting bored of my Ed Sheeran CD and local radio haha!

Thanks

I have an MFD2 also with the 6 disc cd changer.

After a year of looking I'm still yet to find a solution unfortunately.

I believe you can scrap the changer for an ipod connection but I wanted both.

Only real option is to upgrade head unit most likely.

I don't have the changer in my car :(

Hopefully I can find something as I'll be travelling from Isle of Man to Kent in May.

Connects2 or xCarlink or OEM VW iPod kit. I put an MFD2 in my old 1.9 TDI for which I simply swapped over my iPod kit from my old RCD300 (factory head unit) that I bought. It was an OEM VW one.

Will plug into the CD Multichanger port on the back of the head unit. You can't have CD changer AND iPod - You can have one or the other. Then again, why on earth would you want CD's when you can use your iPod?

very easy to do and costs about £30-80 quid for the iPod adaptor. I would avoid the Connects2 one...

The xCarlink was my next in line but after contacting them it's not what I was looking for.

It's not an oem feel and can act up. They didn't even seem confident in their own product.

At that price too (they don't include vat) you're almost better off getting the new head unit.

Well what exactly are you looking for then?

You can select tracks from the iPod, or have skip/previous and 5 playlist choices.

There are very few aftermarket radios which look good in the Mk5. The only ones that do are the Pioneer AVH range, IMO. Which do have iPod. I had the AVH2500BT in my Golf and it was very good indeed. However I got the Headunit very cheap for £100 (usually £150+).
Adaptor for wiring loom cost £8 but then my mate did all the pin-outs so it was plug and play (was hard wired previously)
Steering wheel control adaptor was £50, faceplate surround was £15, so you're looking at around £200 in parts alone, double what an xCarlink is.
The non bluetooth xCarlink is £85 inc VAT available anywhere online. VW one is around the same. Connects2 about half the price.

If you want full iPod control from an OEM headunit buy an RCD510 or RNS510 with MDI.
Although I prefer my Pioneer head unit for iPod control over my RCD.
