Roof Bars for 3 door question
« on: August 23, 2014, 06:54:57 pm »
Done a quick search but couldn't really find anything useful. Me and the misses have just bought some bikes and i'm really not keen on having a carrier on the boot. Only problem i'm finding is every listing i come across for roof bars says it's the same for 3dr and 5dr.

I can't say i'm convinced this is right though as I can't see how the rear bars would clamp on. Has anyone found any that will fit? If so what make as i'm looking at Thule just because they seem to have given me the most promising listing yet.

Cheers,
Freddie

Have a look at this

http://shop.grahamgoode.com/thule-aluminium-aero-wingbars-roof-rack-bars-vw-golf-35dr-hatchback-mk5-2004-2008-68487-p.asp

Looking myself as my old man's roofbox won't fit mine as has the gutter fittings.  I think the link above Is a very good deal.

I too am having difficulty trying to work out how the rear bar fits into a 3 door mk5. Can anyone shed any light as the supplied Thule instruction manual isn't clear

Thule is what I'm after too. Online their guidance isn't very clear at all!

Thule are ' the ' roof bar people, their system means you generally only have to change the foot pack when you change your car not the whole rack. Very good quality, have used their aero bars which look really good and have a rubber insert strip that grips anything you put on before you even tie it down.
I have just bought a three door Gti and need the foot pack to fit the bars I have already, I always have three door cars, the last but one a merc coupe, then a ibiza fr were both three doors and the kits fitted perfectly, rubber coated so never any damage.
The merc had a cut out of the rear window rubbers to show you where the clamp went but just checked the ibiza and my new golf and they do not do the same, just get them as far apart as possible for best stability.
All the best .... Steve

Look at the top of the glass on the rear windows. There's arrows pointing where the roof racks goes ;-)

As above the markings to guide you are there on the glass of a three door and if it reassures you, the genuine accessory roof bars from VW do indeed fit both three and five door versions.
OEM+ 2005 GTI DSG (high factory standard spec and upgraded with S3 alloy hubs, S3 alloy wishbones, Bilstein B8s and VWR springs by my own hands) owned since 2008 and still loving it!

Thanks for the replies, my windows don't have the arrows unfortunately but I'll try peeling back the rubber seal to see where they fit

Would you like a picture of mine? At least you have an idea where the arrows are?
