Will a non-VW service stamp affect the value?
« on: April 05, 2015, 07:41:38 pm »
Hi all,

I have a 2007 Edition 30 with 40k miles on the clock. I have full VW history so far. The question is will a non Vw stamp affect the long-term value of the vehicle? For example if it was stamped by a BMW dealership where a friend works?

Better than no service history.
Of course with invoices better appeal as the next buyer can check what items really changed/serviced.
I dont believe in the stamps anymore. Not without checking the invoices or calling the dealers to double check

We agreed that on a low mileage ED30 a big part of maintaining its value is a full house of VW stamps?

I'm sorry, but how much extra will you pay to have VW do the same work any professional independent VW specialist will do?
VW charge >£90 per hour don't they? Do you really think you'll ever get back the extra spent on servicing at VW come resale time?
Sorry for the questions & negative bias, but my experiences of VW dealers are mostly poor, whereas my independent is worth driving to.

To be honest most VW dealers don't know their arse from their elbow when it cones to repairing their cars, unless it's the latest model.
I'd always go with a specialist independent, who generally have more experience with a broader range of VW's. The independents also know that if they do a sh*t job they lose custom. Whereas VW know they have a steady stream of customers who are more bothered about having the VW stamp, so don't have to put the effort in.

If I was still looking for a car, I'd much prefer to see stamps from an indy, I can then research them and find out good/reliable their work is.

I'm 26 and it's the first time I've taken a car to a main dealer for a service. I usually wouldn't dare pay what they want. Or I'll do it myself.

Buttt now I have an Eddy 30 with 8 vw stamps I thought it best to carry on. And I think it looks good  when you come to sell the car if your selling to a non enthusiast.

It's an eight year old special edition Golf. Will only sell to an enthusiast in the future imo. The VW specialist indie I use charges £33 inc vat an hour. Wouldn't dream of taking mine to VW and although not an Edition 30 has less miles than yours.

But hey it's your car  :happy2:

Tried to book my R32 into a main dealer when I got it last year. What a shambles!! One tried to sell me a service plan that wasn't applicable to my car (despite me triple checking) and then asked for an extra £200 when they realised they'd made a mistake.

The other places I called were a mixture of idiots not knowing what an R32 was, and some very impressive price gouging.

I took it to a very well respected Indy who was half the price and actually knows what they're talking about. As long as a car has the invoices from decent places (not sure about a BMW stamp on a VW tbh), I'd rather see specialist stamp than main dealer stamps.

I would actually stray from a VW service history after seeing and hearing some of the sh*t work that comes out of there. Any enthusiast will know the value of a good indie garages work and the reciept from that is no less valuable than one twice the money from VW.

Unless it was a car in warranty I do all my servicing myself or get friends to do bits for me that I can't do.
A wealth of reciepts from a knowledgable caring owner is worth more than a clueless idiot who never checks his/her oil between services but pays £100p/h at VW for a service of no better quality than independant garages.
