FITTED MFSW CHEAPLY DONE

So after few months of thinking and not wanting to buy a new steering wheel i decided to try something that everyone was saying can't be done. I have purchased a standard mk5 mfsw and took it apart. Unscrewed the buttons and took my steering wheel apart after comparing the wheels for a good while i decided to get to work.



After i did the first side i though its not as hard as i thought but at same time this was time of no return so i really hoped it will go well. So i carried on with the other side used just a stanley blade took about 15 minutes of carefully cutting away all the foam.



So once both were fitted i needed to cut a bit out at the bottom to get the module in which again took a few minutes but then i also needed a flat head screwdriver to dig some of the foam out, sounds horrible but as long as you are careful its all good.




once all been cut out and fit the airbag back into place.



Had it all coded today by @kalu really nice guy took him a short while all works perfectly



finished product done all the work myself apart from coding

Total cost:
MK5 standard mfsw £40 once taken buttons off sold it on for £10 so Actually only £30
CH module from China £40
Airbag loom £15
Slipring £10
Stalk from China £20
HighLine clocks from USA £120

Total cost: £235 plus coding on top

I know its not greatest write ups but can save you some money like it saved me some money.
obviously i will be selling my midline cluster old module and the rest and hopefully i will be able to get some money back for them bits. So total cost be even lower.

Last thing is i have a kenwood double din and i have fitted auto leads stalk adaptor and i can't get it to work with the kenwood ??? anyone know maybe why? followed all the steps on instruction and no joy. Everything else works perfect with the highland all the buttons light up and work through the menu???

nice work, glad you didn't mess it up

have seen an r32 mfsw that looked a right mess after bodging it

on a proper mf wheel the ribbon cables are protected in channels to prevent chafing

@Eddie-NL  yeah I saw the channels I used couple drips of glue at the end to keep them attached to steering wheel so they don't get cought. I am also glad that I didn't mess it up otherwise expensive way to fix it

Do you need to remove all the foam behind the buttons, down to the metal or just enough for a tight fit??

some parts you do and some you don't just take some off and try to fit the buttons and just go in stages. don't try to remove loads as you might take off way to much. so better to take little at a time as you will not mess it up. remember you can't just put the foam back

Got it all cut out and ready to glue the wire, also need to grab 2 screws to hold the buttons in place.

well done mate and just pop down to diy shop grab some screws simple as that match the thread obviously fairly easy to do and saves a lot of money.

So the screw mounting points for the buttons are already in there?

Yes, you just need to pick the rubber out from the screw hole...

I have not yet fitted mine ! but it is all sitting ready to fit...

I had let a friend see the steering wheel today, he said that looks perfect, just the way they do look.
