Chris if you can do as you wish without it costing you money then go for it! I enjoyed every mile in my .:R but my god they are far thirstier than any GTI so be prepared for that.

As for the slow fast bollox I can sum it up pretty easily for you. You will be amazed at the way the thing takes of from a standstill, hell the damn thing nearly broke my back a few times pulling out whilst turning!!

But then there's the mid range punch that you will miss dearly! Without the turbo there is just no get up and go once your on the move!  :happy2:

Oh and if you get one you MUST go non-res with the zorst!!

They handle quite well mate, well set up suspension and haldex means you can put round corners and exit very quickly.

....The Haldex switch really transforms the Mk5 R32 - Race setting is best. Haldex is NOT true 4WD - It changes the front to rear balance in driven wheels. That and an exhaust will really make the car feel much more alive. It's not a slow car at all but doesn't feel as nimble or spirited as a mk5 GTI, let alone an Ed30.

I seriously considered trading my GTI against a new Mk5 R32 when it came out and was lent one and did some back-to-back test drive comparisons on exactly the same routes. I adored the V6 but found myself needing to enter licence losing territory to fully enjoy it - The R32 just doesn't feel as fast as the turbo'd GTI.

What he said  :pomppomp:, if you've got the itch go and scratch it, you'll only be disappointed with the higher Car Tax and it's thirst for go-go juice. :drinking: The V6 growl is to die for and it rev's cleanly all the way to the red line too, unlike my old V6 2.5 Vectra which felt as though it had asthma...

Oh and go for the MK5, the MKIV is a harder and noiser ride plus trying to find a nice one will also take time, but may see you get some cash your way, VW refined the MKV so it feels softer and quieter, but the non res exhuast on the MK5 is a lot noiser than the MKIV.
They are both fab runners and I've loved/love both of mine.. :happy2:

Good luck by the way...
Cheers,

Wayne

With all due respect Chris... Why are you asking on here? Why don't you just phone round some dealers and try and play them off each other? Tell them you've heard of direct swaps before and see what they say. You could try appealing to their wallets too, and offer to take out the minimum finance possible. They get their comission for selling a financial product and shifting a car that is fast becoming very unpopular and hard to sell. Then you settle the finance as early as you are allowed to and only take a tiny hit with the interest.

Colbornes in Guildford have always got R32's on their forecourt - because they are hard to shift! They had two Ed30s last weekend too which doesnt happen very often.

You don't get if you dont ask, worst they can say is no.

Not interested in another Golf Steve, just fancied an R because of the noise and 4x4 for the winter months until i get the M3! No point getting an ED30 because i wouldn't mod it because I'd only be keeping it for 4 months max! You see?

Thanks for the advice all, will go to a dealer soon and enquire perhaps.

Make sure you do the flapper mod mate

The exhaust is restricted by a valve/flap until you reach a certain speed when it opens up (something to do with noise regs i think) Makes a huge difference on start up and casual acceleration.

A mk4 but you get the idea

All you is pull off a tube and plug it up, easy to put back if and when you like in 1 min  :drinking:
