Michelin super sports 225/40/ZR18 92Y???
« on: April 16, 2015, 03:48:34 pm »
I need new tyres and Im interested in Michelin super sports however I have a few questions

1. What is the difference between 225/40/ZR18 92Y and 225/40/R18 92Y? What does the Z mean?

2. Are these tyres good in the winter or just summer and are they better than Pilot Sport 3s? If yes then why?

3. Currently on the car there are conti sport contact 3s, of which 3 are W rated tyres and also 1 Y rated tyre on the passenger rear side. Will it make a difference if there is a W on one side and Y on the other axle?

4. http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/michelin/pilot-super-sport/225-40-zr18-92y-192693

From the above link it says FSL, as well as XL. What does FSL mean and FR, FS? Something to do with rim protection, is it ok to purchase tyres that have these labels? Ive also seen S1 in the description  on the tyreleader website, these tyre websites make it very confusing for me sorry. I know AO means Audi Only and Runflat is a no no.

Sorry for posting so many questions just want to get the best tyre for my GTi, while also making sure not to get the wrong ones  :scared:

Thanks

To answer you question 2 more precisely than the above.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport sets it self apart from all other ultra high performance tyres on the market due to two reasons.
1. it utilises a dual compound rubber solution to give a treadware of 300 (like all the other tyres on the market) but the outer part of the tyre is a softer compound and as most road cars ours included have negative camber it only treads on the outer softer part when cornering hard thereby giving grip like an R rated tyre.
2. Contrary to all the other tyres in it's category it uses "Twaron" instead of steel inside the tyre, which doesn't heat up the air in the tyre as the steel ones does, which again allows for the main rubber to be soft and still have many miles in it. Also should you take these to a track day you need not lowering the tyre pressure as it maintanins a lower temp when used there's no need for messing with tyre pressure :)

I hope this info helps you? :)

Over the top mod list ;o)

Guys thank you. Just on your point about track days, I dont think I'll be doing any anytime soon, this car gets used around town and some dual carriage + motorway driving. in both wet and dry + winter and summer. I herd these tyres are the best, so just making sure before I order. Thank you again, just need to know now if there is a difference between ZR and R now ?

I believe ZR refers to rim protection (not 100% though)

They're a great tyre, I have some 225/35/19's on my current wheels (done about 3000 miles) and they're awesome. My new set of 225/40/18's arrived today to go on my new wheels next week.

OK just had a look and the Z Is just an easy way to see the tyre is rated for above 149mph, and then the Y is a further rating to show its safe for up to 186mph
