Discs and caliper paint

Looking to do a big brake change from new discs and pads all round, new brake fluid, and looking to paint my calipers red as they are looking tired and also paint the rotors black to keep it looking tidy.

Do I need to use primer on the calipers and discs? If so how many layers and also how many layers do people recommend for paint?

Calipers will be coming off to.

Mask up
Paint then dry

Is that it? Anything missing ? Sorry if I sound daft but I haven't ever done anything like this ever

I used a wire brush on the discs and then some aggreisve sand paper on the calipers to bring it back as much as I could. Then got some hammerite smoth red spray and did about 4-5 coats on the calipers and I did 2 coats of hammerite (brush on) silver for the discs.

Hi mate depends on how bad your calipers are. Is the paint flaking? Or has the paint gone dull? If there just dull give them a good roughing up with a scotchbrite  and spray with the red . Then lacquer over the top of them. If the rotors and calipers are flakey i would wire brush them, to remove most of the flakey paint, so there smooth. Rough the area you want to paint with a scotchbrite again, this time prime with 3-4 coats, allowing time to dry inbetween coats, then apply red to calipers and black to your rotors, again allowing time to dry inbetween coats then lacquer with 2-3 coats. Job done mate..

Discs will be brand new so was just gunna use a brake cleaner to remove the grease then paint. So I'm right in thinking they will need priming?

Calipers are dull on the front, back ain't to bad but might aswell do them all the exact same colour whilst I'm on. Is the lacquer a must do?

Cheers chris, mine are painted in 2k paint.
Lacquer is a must if your doing them with aerosols its what gives it its shine. And helps protect them alittle bit.
If there new discs, brake cleaners them like you said, then rough em up so the paint/primer sticks. New disc will require a coat of prime as there just bare metal. And will rust in no time. Tbh they are more than likely goin to rust in the end due to aerosol paint not being that hard wearing. But they will look better for the time being. When there done i would avoid heavy use of tfr or alloy wheel cleaner on them so they last longer.

Ok so disc:

Clean with bRake cleaner, rough up with scotch pad thing, prime, paint.

Calipers:

Clean muck off, rough up again with pad, paint, lacquer

Does that sound right? Has the penny finally dropped for me. How many layers of primer and lacquer do you recommend ?

Just looked on ebay and lacuer is just lacquer , thought I'd need a hi temp kind but can't see any

Yeah mate, thats it, on the disc 2 coats of primer should do. Then 2-3 coats of black and then 2 coats of lacquer. Just remember to leave5-10 mins imbetween coats, do them to quick it will run or take longer to dry.
Calipers: again 2-3 coats of red and 2 coats of laqclear. Make sure everything is fully dry before refitting. Nowt worse than messing up end result due to rushing!
