Should I keep the GTI?

In 2 minds whether I should keep or sell my MK5 Golf GTI. Had it just ovr 4 years now and absolutely love it. It's a high spec manual KO3 gti. Had a DSG ed30 prev with Revo and susp mods but just didn't gel with it as I have my normal gti. Just bought a facelift C63 which is an amazing machine but I still miss driving my gti. Will Prob sell the 63 later this year or maybe early next year and have been thinking what else can I get for around 5-6K (price I would sell my gti for)

Apart from another gti and maybe older m3's etc not much else that appeals to me! The gti is the perfect balance of looks, perf, handling and luxury. Such a complete car.. Also the high spec makes a huge difference. Also can't see gti prices dropping a whole lot now unless they are rough examples...

Even for 10-15K not mch else I can think of apart from a golf R, 335i/d and maybe an S3...

If money stretches then an S3 would make sense - K04, Quattro, kit etc. Obvs same argument with the R, just comes down to your taste.

Plus consider that you love the GTI, and you love it for a reason.

I've owned a few cars that spanked my others on paper, but they didn't necessarily click with me. I didn't get 'that feeling'.

It's easy to convince yourself the grass is greener. But if you love the GTI why bother looking elsewhere?!

Must admit ive had maybe 40+ cars in my 13 years of driving some of which were nice motors
Ep3 type R when they were quite new
2006 golf Gti in 2009
Mk1 focus Rs
Clio 172's
Rs turbo's
Etc etc and even though ive only had my current 2nd Mk5 Gti for around 8 months and ive had few niggly issues to rectify on it I can honestly say its a cracking car and simply love driving it
Completely standard/original and fully loaded 57 plate 3 door
Great great car

My wife drives a 57 plate Gt tdi 140 and as good a car/work horse it is for us its no Gti and never will be
Missus loves the Gti drive also

Keep your golf mate unless you plan to go spend crazy on something much better/faster
Mk6 Gti isn't a upgrade and im not that convinced that a mk7 is either really not for £25,000+ compared to £7,000 for decent mk5

I'm more or less in the same boat. Been thinking about it for a week and I'm going to repair it and keep it, there is simply nothing out there (unless a Land Rover is stupidly cheap) and the cost to change would be more than the cost of the repair. KEEP IT.

As Clarkson said in 2004/5 the mk5 Gti is all things to all men  :grin:

Normal Gti represents insane value for money nowadays, can pick up absolute stunner for 7k

^ That's it exactly. Pound for pound the GTI just can't be beaten.

It rightfully won all those awards.

You could argue that before the mk5 there wasn't anything VAG to compare, so had the R come along before the GTI I'm sure that would have achieved the same acclaim. Bit of a convoluted statement, but hopefully you get my point - if you really must change, make it an R.

Or just do the right thing and keep the GTI ;-)

It's more the DSG gearbox I didn't gel with. The car was amazing and produced over 100bhp more than my stock gti but I like the simplicity of the manual and almost ZERO turbo lag from the KO3 turbo.

I've owned various cars whilst owning the gti, M5, C63, ED30 etc... But none have ticked all the boxes like the gti. Going to get it reinsured next week, clean her up and start using her again and see how I get on.

S3 offers a lot of performance but don't like the looks and it's a fair bit more expensive than the value of my current gti. Four wheel drive would be nice tho

Never driven a MK6 GTI but don't like the look of them. MK7 I've driven and its a nice car. Interior is lovely but comes with a big price tag. Wouldn't chop in my mk5 for one
