25 steps to changing your front brake discs and pads
« on: April 18, 2015, 08:58:46 pm »
I did my front brakes this morning on the GTI and thought I would share my crib sheet. Nothing fancy here like pictures and torque figures, but I hope it helps someone with the basic idea of what is involved.

1. Put a sign on the dash reminding you to pump brakes
2. Remove the brake fluid cap
3. Remove the wheel and turn it towards you
4. Remove the outer caliper clip
5. Remove the rubber caps covering caliper bolts using a screwdriver
6. Remove the 2x caliper bolts - 7mm Allen
7. Unclip the brake pad level sensor (only applicable to the passenger side)
8. Remove caliper from disc
9. Remove rear pad from caliper
10. Use swan neck pliers or caliper tool to push the caliper piston back in
11. Hang the caliper from the suspension using cable ties or bungee cable
12. Remove front brake pad from disc
13. Remove 2x 21mm carrier bolts and remove carrier
14. Remove retaining screw from face of disc - T30 Torx
15. Remove disc from hub
16. Clean any corrosion from the face of hub
17. Install new disc and reinstall retaining screw
18. Clean any corrosion from carrier and reinstall
19. Apply grease to caliper and carrier contact areas on brake pads
20. Reverse steps 12 and 11
21. Reverse steps 9 to 4
22. Repeat steps 3 to 21 on the other side
23. Reinstall the brake fluid cap
24. Place the car back on the ground and tighten wheel bolts
25. Pump brakes and go for a drive to appreciate your work
