its a simple job to do. hardest part is undoing the triple square bolt underneath. take no more than 30mins to do.

Dave don't waste £70 on it.
I'm f*cking useless at stuff like that and even I had no problems at all.

Follow the guide, make sure you've got everything you need before you start and again follow the guide step by step.

I'm a new mk5 gti owner too. I have also purchased the cam follower and will be changing it in the next few days.

I also bought a new dv and pcv. I changed over both items today and the car has been transformed. I would highly recommend you change atleas the dv. I actually thought the car was fine. It had no problems and drove absolutely fine with nothing weird. It was only on checking the old dv that I noticed it had a 1cm tear in the rubber/diaphragm.

For £35 odd I would highly recommend you change the dv if there is no record of it being changed.

It's a fiddly but easy procedure. Plenty of guides on here and on Google.

Make sure you jack up the drivers side and use axle stands.

Hi - can I ask where you got your parts from? As thinking of doing this myself over the next couple of weeks

Thanks

@cnut I'm in the same situation as the op and was planning on doing mine tomorrow. Mines an 05. Should I bother? What does the banjo bolt look like?

Sorry for the late reply. I got my parts from TPS Milton Keynes. I got the cam follower, dv and pcv at the same time and dsg oil and filter.  They had everything in stock. I did try VW first but they would have had to order the bits in.

I had already replaced my dv and pcv a few days ago. Very easy but the dv was a bit fiddly. Hardest part for me was taking the electrical plug off lol.

I changed my cam follower today. Early 05 gti. Slightly different then the diy guides but simple enough. Took about an hour.

The steps I took.

Removed fuse 25 fuel pump fuse
Two plugs on fuel pump. The grey one was pointing toward the engine so all I did was turn the nut slightly so I could get access to the clip to pull it off. You will know what I mean when you see it.
There is a rubber/ plastic pipe on the right of the fuel pump. It just pulls off and gives you a bit more room to work with. Also remove the pcv pipe the one in the way of the fuel pump. Will be obvious when you do the job and push it out of the way.

Now I had no pressure relief valve. So I carefully undone the 19mm fuel line first slowly turn by turn and no pressure at all. Just a few drops of petrol came out.
The second fuel line was a pain. I could not see what tool fitted the hole. I though it was an Allen key shape but it's not. It's a splined bit. Lots of little splines. I have a sealey torq bit set. I found it very easy once I figured out what bit fits it to use the bit with a 10mm ratchet spanner to undo it. Again when you see it it will make sense.
After that remove the three bolts holding the fuel pump in. My fuel pump was stuck like a good un. Do t use a screw driver to pride it off. Twist left right up down slowly with a pulling motion and it will eventually come off. My cam follower was worn and I think very thin so I am glad I changed it.

The old cam follower just comes out. Put the new one in and put everything back together. Lot easier putting it back.

It's not hard although some of it can be fiddly.

Don't pay anyone to do it for you. Do it yourself and the felling you get once the job is done is amazing. Lol.

If you need more help let me know.

Ps sorry for the grammar. Very tired. Got early start and on my
Phone.

@peskyjones I think so1o answers that question perfectly! @so1o how many miles is your car on. It's something that I should definitely do on mine as its on 104k with no history of it ever being changed!

Just to clarify

If you look at the picture http://www.gpat.co.uk/images/products/MST4010S.jpg

The spline bit looks like that. You use a 10mm spanner on the other end. Makes life easier when space is limited. Get the spline bit into the nut. Please make sure it's a snug fit. It's very easy to use a size smaller thinking it's the correct one and then stripping it. If that happens your buggered. . The way around that is to get a star bit and hammer it in there but the problem here is the space is very limited. Anyway once the star bit is in the nut carefully  put a spanner on the other end mine was a 10mm. Whatever size fits your bit preferably a ratchet spanner and it will take you  20 seconds to get off.

It really is simple. Take your time. Don't rush it. The money you save by doing it yourself get yourself some tools or put it towards your car.
