Which is overall faster, DSG or manual

My mates got a Leon FR manual. You can see where this is going... He said mine (gti DSG) is faster in a straight line, but his will be faster round a track if driven properly. Is this the case?

No, the dsg is faster everywhere except top speed where it makes no difference. However the manual would be more fun

On a track a DSG box will give you gear changes where it would be dangerous to do so in manual, 8ms gear changes means stability isn't lost. Which of the two is better is more subjective.
Technically DSG boxes do everything better than a manual. That's irrefutable.

Driver engagement/reward...entirely personal.

Some prefer a hand job, some like it done for them

I would assume a manual would have ever so slightly better in gear acceleration but a DSG would accelerate better overall due to the fast gear changes.

Either way the manual is more of a drivers car

In gear acceleration should be identical.

This is ironic as I was about to post a thread relating to this topic.

I have a test drive booked in for the new DSG GTI to see if I could live with it on a day to day basis. I enjoy a spirited drive and trackdays so im not sure what to expect.

Im curious and tempted to get the DSG but I dont want to buy it then find I dont like it and wish I went manual.

How do you guys find it on track?

I haven't been on track but I know down shifts are not always instant so on track you may prefer manual as it might hesitate and put you off your line.

See my earlier post in this thread.  The DSG box is transformed with a remap. Read Revo's site for a full explanation. This is needed for track work.

Drive it as a manual with paddles. I don't see why a delay (never experienced one) would put you off your line more so than a manual given that changes are so much faster. Two hands on the wheel at all times...if anything it will aid better lines as it gives you one less thing to do. Better for track novices.

Sometimes it takes a while to find the right gear when down changing which at the time can feel like a lifetime so can be frustrating as well if you are wanting to accelerate a little just after the down change.
Its only a minor niggle I have with the gearbox but otherwise love it

Well, almost. DSG box weighs 25kg more than manual. Its probably negligable

I guess it would depend on the gearing as well, assuming they are identical?

A DSG reset/adaptation may not go amiss either.

VW manual boxes have always sucked, which isn't helped by useless engine mounts.  Pulling away from rest is always a chore in the 1st couple of gears as they hate being rushed, which gets worse as the mounts soften from the movement / heat, so DSG will always be quicker than a manual!
