We did the head on the S3 at the same time as all the other work, so its hard to say what difference it actually made..

I have never heard of anyone doing 'testing' on this though, certainly not to the point at which you could put a number to it..

The K04 will flow what it can flow, the engine is not the restriction with that turbo, so gaining power at the top end with a K04 seems very unlikely.. With a larger turbo, yeah you most probably will find gains, but there going to be minimal.. Maybes 15hp tops on a GT30 running 30psi..

Also, bare in mind, thats all at the top, you will loose a certain amount under the curve as a trade off..

Two second on Google came up with this:

Quote

In simple terms if a ported cylinder head gives 20% extra power on a N/A engine it will also give 20% extra power on a turbo'd engine. Maybe even more once the heat drop is taken into account. However, the bhp amount of the power gain will be much higher on the turbo engine because the base power is higher. If you take a 150 bhp N/A engine that extra 20% will add 30 bhp but if the engine is turbocharged to 15 psi boost and produces 300 bhp on the standard head then the 20% extra power from the ported head becomes 60 bhp.

How true this is, remains to be seen. This is certainly something I will be reading into further! You are right though Jonny, it's more a case of finding the bottle neck within the system and if this isn't the head as you elude to, then it's a lot of money for little return. Some engines certainly seem to benefit more from porting than others. The 2.0 Duratec used in Caterhams responds extremely well to head work. I suppose with turbo'd engines there are other things you can do to improve things before shelling out on head work.

Jonny, what did you have done to the S3 head? Was it properly bench flowed or did you just have the ports enlarged?
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

Engine out for someone who knows what they are doing is fine but still quite a shocking pic when you see it with no front end more or less.

Haha, I have never seen such a generalizing claim as that! If we could all gain 60bhp on an engine just because its turbo charged dont you think the manufacturer would do it? Absolute balls.. That statement means nothing..

We just literally flowed them, so smoothed out the inlet and exhaust ports etc.. Which is just about all you can do on this head due to the water gallerys being so close..

Im sure some people make it up as they go along..

Some stage 2 plus cars have dyno'd over 400hp.. Think that says it all..

ye but backdraft peg their ko4 stage 2 plus at 360hp. near 20hp improvment on their rollers is a good indication of gains.

If you can prove to me that on a K04 back to back you gain 20hp top end with just a port and polish I'll pay for you to get it done on yours..

Well, finally the gearbox is back in one piece.

Steve at Statllers has been great at letting me nosey at the car at each step of the process and has made me feel confident in how things are being done.

Getting part numbers etc has been a task on it's own as no-one seems to want to share information and VW will not release part numbers for any of the DSG.

Separating the main gear from the OEM open diff meant taking it to a nearby precision engineering firm to remove the rivets and they did a superb job too.

Steve was at work till 8.30pm tonight, putting the DSG box back together, so top marks from me :happy2: :notworthy:
Let's hope his wife is still talking to him :scared:

Next stop is the engine back in with the VF engine and transmission mounts in place. :jumping:
