S3 IC vs Aftermarket
« on: April 23, 2015, 11:47:48 pm »
Does an S3 make a lot of difference over stock GTI IC or is it not worth the effort and preferred to go for a proper after market like Peron?

Uprated Ic is advised for stage 2, there are a few out there that have been praised with better results but Iv got a s3 (with alloy ends) fitted to my stage2+ pirelli and it's fine so far!

If you plan on getting a better IC fitted, then going for the S3 is a waste of time, the work involved is the same and no matter what stage you are the best IC possible is always worth fitting.
Peron is getting high praise in the UK, but have a look at the swedish DO88 aswell, i'm running it currently after having the APR and THS revision 2, and do get a lower temp along with lower pressuredrop over the IC. Also the price is good

Over the top mod list ;o)

I can second this, stage 2+, plenty of track work and no issues with mine. Couldn't comment if any others are better, I expect there are some that are.
As previously mentioned, it's role is to support sustained performance not add it. Better and more efficient designs can only help.

Gone but not forgotten :-)

I've read before that an S3 IC combined with a front mounted intercooler (like the Forge item) off great airflow and good for higher levels of tune (i.e. beyond stage 2+). How true this is I'm not sure, but I'm going down the road of an S3 IC now, then will bolt the FMIC upgrade on if needed.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Looks nice but with UK VAT and import duty slapped on top, it will be closer to £600 with the shipping, which is expensive.

OEM S3 is half that.  Realistically, what real world differences are we talking between:-

Stock vs S3
S3 vs Aftermarket

If it's just a few degrees C sustained on a full throttle run, doesn't seem worth the hassle and expense to me.

think im going to just settle with the twintercooler style from E-bay.

I got Meth already so the combination should keep things nice and chilled imo
