Should you sell Gti for more, book price or less after mods?

So it's coming to that time when I am thinking of selling the Gti and just wanted to ask should I sell for the book price or more in view of all the mods or less due to the mods? What's your thoughts? Thanks for any input.

Depends on the mods i guess, but I think you'd probably make more money by breaking it back to standard

I agree, if they are inexpensive mods that will help the sale, then leave them on.  If they are expensive and / or alienate some buyers i.e. loud exhaust / CAI etc. then I would consider splitting if you don't sell within a reasonable time. GLWS!

My take on this is if they're quick and easy to remove and add nothing other than 'bling' and return the car to standard then get them off. CAI for example which has been added for no other reason than noise.

If they're mods that are left on but have been implemented on a budget (by this I mean cheap poor quality parts DIY fit by somebody who hasn't got a clue or the tools) and are in the name of 'performance' then walk away. It says much about the attitude to car maintenance and tuning. Far better that they had spent their budget on standard servicing by a reputable agent.

Now for a more complex scenario that admittedly has a limited audience - consider a car with a file with £10k of invoices (for example) for tuning servicing on top of this. Consider that all these parts are new, top quality 3rd party and OE, fitted and recommended by a well respected service agent and tuning specialist. No DIY work undertaken and service schedule up to date. This would clearly be a highly modified vehicle, but possibly one which has been done sensitively and one which tries to hide the changes - OE appearance maintained wherever possible, everything added has a function and a reason for being so. Parts included in sale to return to OE.
Now, if you had it mind to buy a standard vehicle and get some tuning/modifying done and thought you might spend ~£3000 it's clear that you'll not get all this work for £3k. Would you not pay £3/4k over list price for this professionally modified vehicle that some might consider has some provenance due to the sheaf of invoices for parts and labour from the right specialist?

If I am honest I don't think I would pay over the odds for a modded vehicle car or bike. Even if with all receipts etc I would be thinking "track day thrashed" rather than "cherished". I'd be looking for fsh "one carefull owner" which is what I bought. I am planning to do some mods but that is just for my fun & I don't expect any money back on that. I'll either sell it for book price with mods or take back to std and keep quiet about the mods. Only my tuppence worth.

I mentioned this when I was getting my map... Like previous people have said if you've modded the car properly and kepts servicing on time, and cars in good condition why would people pay above list price. I'm stage 2+ on my pirelli which is a rare car so was considering to split when it comes to sale but why not sell to someone on here who knows what's been done to it,when, where and if it was by someone reputable! I would buy a modded car if I knew all these details.

It depends entirely on your target audience. Most enthusiasts would buy a car modified already if it is where they would take the car. But if you want a wider audience, then it'll need to be stock.

Return to standard where you can.

You will make more money back and appeal to a larger market as a result.

There's no 1 answer, depends on the car, what mods, how far from standard and how quickly you want to sell.

I had a modified mk4 polo, which was very much done to my taste, and there wasn't much of a market for modified ones. I removed coilovers, wheels, VR6 leather seats etc before selling, made more money that way. It still had a couple of mods (smoothed, de badged, tints etc.)

On the other hand, I sold my mk4 golf gti with mods intact. In this case I believed the mods I had done appealed to more buyers (the car had good feedback on forums and at shows/meet ups etc.) and I sold it for over book value and fairly quickly too. It had upsolute chip, coilovers, dished 18" wheels, smoothed r32 front bumper, anni skirts, milltek, smoothed rear, tints, and a decent audio system (genesis amps, JL sub, uprated components, hidden false floor, dynamat sound deadening.) I may have got slightly more if I stripped everything, but not by much, I worked it out by checking ebay prices for the mods.
