Head unit help.
« on: April 27, 2015, 10:58:14 pm »
When I bought my GTi it came with the RCD300 which provided me with an MDI (I believe) input, located in drivers glovebox, installed by VW. Press CD twice, connect iPod and hey presto!

I decided to upgrade to the RCD510, and went about removing the old head unit, replacing it with the RCD510 I Had bought. Full use of radio but now my MDI iPod connector won't connect/play my iPod.

Anyone have any ideas why? Could it be to do with input pins being different between heady its?? VW quoted me £300 to have an AUX I put installed  :fighting2:

Daft question probably, have you checked its plugged in properly?
Might be worth having a search see if needs coding in or anything which I doubt tbh.

VW quoted me £100 to get it coded, but said its a 50/50 chance whether it will do anything?

Not sure mate how would I check? iPod connector runs to drivers glovebox and does charge my iPod touch 3rd Gen?

I wouldn't waste money going to VW to get the HU coded. Try to find someone with VCDS near you that knows a bit of coding. Shouldn't be too hard and must be many DIY online.

Well when you fitted the new RCD510 did you just hse the quad lock wiring that came with the car or fit a kauftec loom to a MDI. I ask because a mk5 iPod dock won't work with RCD510. I'm running 510 with MDI and new loom. Was plug and play no coding.

Ah I get you now, yeah was just the quad lock wiring. Had to buy an adapter from VW (2 singles into a double) but that was it.

Can you explain this loom? Excuse me I'm a novice at this :happy2:

You need the correct loom and a MDI dock. You can get it from Kufatec or from Carsystems.pl.
