Fan Pack Replacement/Air Con Dead - MKV GTI
« on: May 11, 2015, 04:46:59 pm »
Guys,

I'm looking for some advice on my GTI's fan pack. The left hand fan (as you look at the front of the car) appears to have ceased up, this in turn has blown my condenser/compressor (I'm not sure which one!) and now I have no Air-Con!

My question is, does anybody know if there's a cheaper way to fix this than to pay VW £186.16 to fit me a new fan pack (without the condenser/compressor)!?

I've read that all MK5 VW's use the same fan pack, and that I could pull one off any MK5 vehicle, however if this is a common issue, that may be a little risky because as soon as the fan goes again, my air con will die!

Any advice?

Many thanks  :happy2:

Take it to a specialist such as Alex at AKS, likely to be more knowledgable than your local VW garage.

Have you checked the fan with vcds. The little fan will only run if the aircon pressure reaches a certain level.

Get the aircon pressure switch checked - that was what stopped mine from working.

Cheers for the replies guys, would the pressure switch make the fan impossible to spin manually? Of the two fans one spin's freely, the other one wont at all?

Hi there

In my experience:

  • if your small fan will not physically turn by hand then it has most likely seized and will need replacing unless you are mechanically minded and able to dismantle, free it off and reassemble
  • if your small fan turns by hand, but does not work when the aircon is switched on (and the main fan runs noisily at full speed), then it may be that one of the two brushes inside has stuck preventing contact.  Again if you are capable, you may be able to open the back of the fan by working the tabs, free off and lube the brush in its holder and it should work again (I did this on mine in February, took 30 minutes start to finish and cured the problem)

Hope this helps!
