Measuring BHP and Torque
« on: May 13, 2015, 08:20:48 pm »
Hi Chaps,

Not sure if I have dont this right but wanted to check with some experts. I have tried to measure my BHP and Torque.

What I did was into Engine 01, the Meas Block 08, then in the 3 boxes on the left entered 001, 115 and 120. I then hit Log.

Put my DSG in Manual and 3rd then drove at about 20 to the start of the run, I then hit Start and went full throttle for around 10 seconds and saved the results. Is this correct or am I totally wrong. Have attached my graph and the workings out from the ROSS Tech spread sheet. Am i supposed to just take the highest values in the BHP and Torque column and take that as my readings or average it all out. And that is if it is correct.

I have a MK5 ED30 by the way if that helps and I have done no performance enhancements on it at all but not sure if any done previously but all standard exhaust, intake from what I can see.

Thanks in advance

Anyone any advice on this as looking at the figures mine come back as:

BHP: 269bhp @ 5320 RPM
Torque: 271 @ 3520 RPM

My understanding is the Stock Ed30 is:

BHP: 227bhp @ 5200 RPM
Torque: 221 @ 2200 RPM

Does this need moving to the VCDS section Mods rather than the general section, cheers

Bit of help here chaps, I would love to believe my car is running at near 270bhp but more than likely I have made a mistake somewhere

Hi mate,

I'm new here but I have been told that Mark 5 gti's don't make the the power the factory state they actually make more and I was told that an ED30 typically makes about 260bhp  so yours doesn't sound a million miles away from that.

I can't be more help though because as I say I'm new.

Paul

You're not far out and the hp calc' is right utilising lb/ft, (Torque x Speed) / 5252 .  If you leave the torque as Nm it will give a KW output instead.  Only issue I can see is of accuracy as the car calculates torque indirectly off various parameters such as air flow and fuelling and not a direct torque output that an engine dyno would.  It won't be to far out though.  :happy2:

Nice one but that means my car may have had a remap or something but cannot see any mods

Requested boost and boost should show up a remap....
There is no replacement for displacement....
But a turbo does help....

They usually make the stated power on a dyno.... 195-205BHP  for the GTI and 225-235BHP for the ED30.

Yours may well already have a map on it, but remember the method you are using is only a guide

True and may do a couple of more runs to see the difference however if I had of got say higher than standard but under say 250bhp I would have presumed it was a rough guide and out but to be at nearly 270 seems a big margin

Those values are optimistic. You can see them live using a Polar FIS module. My GT Sport showed +190HP one time, when in a dyno it measured 171HP. Just a rough guide, I'd say.
