Oil Consumption getting worried
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:21:25 am »
Hi Guys

We have a mk5 Gti 2007 and the cars only done 40k, Have lots of service history etc to back that up, but getting worried about the amount of oil its using.

It dosnt smoke etc but seems to be burning off 1Ltr every 1000Miles.

Is there anything I can do to help this ?

Later this year Im off to nurburgring and will be taking oil with me just worried if something is wrong with the engine. :scared:

Thats quite alot but its within VWs tolerance as belive it or not they say anything upto 1 litre every 600-700 miles is acceptable

Mine uses about half a litre every 1000 miles  :happy2:

Maybe try a thicker oil - 5W 40?

My 2008 GTI used to use up about a litre every 1000 but since oil was changed to 5w 40 it hasn't needed any in 1000 miles. Not certain what viscosity was in before as this was last owner but I guess lower viscosity.

So would a 5w/30 fully synthetic be 502-505 Vw spec yes?

Thanks for the reply's

Its not just me then.

Im seeing the rock oil rep in a couple of days will see what he recommends, do you guys do injector / engine flushes ?

I heard because they are direct injection engines they can be quite dirty.

Comming from honda I am also having to get used to a car that actually uses oil! totally freaked me out at first but I realise its just another one of the odd quirks of the TFSI units like that weird diesel sound.

I seem to use about the same and always just top up with a high quality oil.

May possibly try a thicker 10W 40 for summer then go back to the 5w 40 for winter.

Hope this helps!

It's important to use a high enough spec oil. VW 504 507.
I was using Castrol Edge - topped up a bit, though not too much.
I changed to Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5w 30 about 1.5k ago and the oil has hardly moved on the dipstick! Very pleased with that.
Quite a few folks on here use Millers Nano Drive which seems to reduce consumption too.

I have been dealing with this as well. I have replaced the valve cover that I found to have been partly at fault:

I also removed the check valve inside the rear pcv breather tube, but because the breather tube dumps into the intake... I decided to get a breather block off and vta cc in the future: http://www.performancebyie.com/integrated-engineering-rear-breather-blockoff-plate-for-transverse-2-0t-fsi-tsi-engines

It is still possible that the turbo seals are going as well as piston seal ring or valve stem guides. But since oil, for me, was quite heavy in the boost tubes...my focus has been on anything that can and does dump into the intake.

P.S. I was getting small puffs of smoke right when beginning to roll from nearly every stop in addition to when at full boost. 5w40 is a good one...and 0w40 if very cold where you are.

yea definately, I owned a few B series hondas and they barely used a drop of oil at all. Maybe I got lucky!

Millers Nanodrive 5w40 is highly recommended for these engines, seems to be a magical cure for a lot of engines. Well worth a go
