Help - Limp Mode
« on: May 18, 2015, 09:40:12 am »
Hi all, I've seen a good few of these in the past and I know there's a few solutions so maybe someone could shed some light.

I was driving 100miles at 120km/hr. Pulled over for 2 mins and left car running. Got back into car and merged again with motorway so I brought the revs to maybe 4K in each gear. When I got to 110km/hr the engine management light and traction control light came on and it went into limp mode.

I pulled over and turned engine off. When turning it off there was an awful heavy noise.

The car started up fine and has done since, as if nothing is any different.

(Note - I cleaned that mayo off the oil cap 2 days prior and gave the inside rim a wipe with a tissue because there was some slight crusty burnt on oil. I stopped doing this in fear that some of the gritty bits might fall into the oil itself. I am due my oil service which I had booked in this week already.)

Could those gritty bits have fallen in and blocked the mesh filter?

Oil pick up pipe?

High pressure fuel pump?

My vcds failed recently so I'm buying a genuine one this week, should be here in a few days so I'll scan then if VW won't do it for me with the oil change.

Disregarding the few on heated seats (due to wires being unhooked) and the typical EVAP one everyone gets.....

The one that most likely caused my limp mode was a failure of coil pack 1? P1335

I replaced my sparks exactly 1 year ago.

Do I replace coil pack number 1 or do I replace all of them with the R8 coil packs?

Depends on money. I'd prefer the upgraded R8's all round. By sounds of things they dont fail as oftern if ever. Seems the logical next step if you can.

That's actually my preference but they won't be delivered before Friday to Ireland and I've to make a 150mile journey so I better get it replaced.

Where do you get a fail of coilpack 1 from?

sh*te! Good spot, I hit P1355 not P1335.

Do you think that's my MAF sensor on the way out?

It's working fine the past 8 drives?

Choice of 3 sensors failing or an air leak. Data logging with VCDS will tell you which. Monitor the IAT reading, MAF reading and Coolant Temp reading during normal driving, from cold, through to full throttle runs when warm.

Check fuel trims and Lambda correction for evidence of an air leak, and if trims are high and MAF seems ok - go hunting for a leak

Dan you're a gentleman. I've literally just bought VCDS today so all of this logging is new to me.

If it's not too much trouble and you're up for it I'd appreciate a very brief how to on that?

How would monitor these readings from VCDS?

Fuel trims and lambda correction on VCDS?

Is the car mapped or standard?

Measuring blocks is what you need. Fuel trim info is given as a clickable link in the Rosstech link i posted above

Find the measuring blocks for the sensors mentioned and check their readings. IAT and Coolant temp should read the same as ambient temp (give or take a degree or 2) before starting the car once it has stood overnight) IAT should stay within 10-20 degrees above ambient on a standard intercooler, Coolant temp shoould get up to low 90's and stay there. MAF will need to be logged when driving to see what figures you are getting.

Fuel trims are block 032, they should be fairly close to zero (less than 10%). More could indicate a leak, or a faulty MAF. Again info can be found through the link i sent.

From a quick google it sounds as if it's either the MAF or an airleak. post up the trim numbers from 032 when you can
