Got my heart set on a mk5 GTI after couple months of research into what to buy with money I have saved up from first proper job. Drove some over the weekend and found one with full VW history, private seller who is great, needs a service but otherwise looked great and for a good price for the mileage, age and options etc. Only real faults I noticed was a few stone chips (to be expected I know) of which one or two were rusted. One was bonnet which was very small and hardly noticeable (and I assume an easy area to fix?) but other was a 4mm round spot on the roof from an apparent stone chip, mid line of car about 15 cm back from the windscreen.
Otherwise the car is great, and short of actually driving it myself I am sold on it, but the rust is worrying me because of the reputation of these cars with rust. Owner said the spot was previously painted/touched up but came back. Am I right to be worried? Can this sort of thing be resolved properly and for what sort of cost? Or will it likely come back and be a constant battle and should I continue searching? I feel I am being picky as I've saved for a while and this will be my first proper car so am maybe expecting too much? I have some extra cash that can be put into repairing minor details but have no idea what I would have to pay for this sort of thing?
Any advice greatly appreciated, really wanna get hold of one of these but don't wanna get too eager and jump on something I will later regret. Thanks!
