Battery dead after fitting RNS-510 B
« on: May 19, 2015, 09:39:13 pm »
I've heard so much about this but didn't think it would happen to me!

I bought a second-hand RNS-510 over the weekend and fitted it. Once parked up and engine switched off, I could hear a light buzzing sound of a fan coming from the headunit. I suspected this would cause battery issues after reading all the horror stories.

I have a 2006 Golf GTi manual.

How can I resolve this issue? I've read on some forums that this can be recoded?

Looking forward to some speedy advice as my car is dead at the moment!

The unit runs for a while incase you come back to the car and so doesn't have to reboot. On a 2006 GTI I would expect battery drain though. You will probably need an upgraded can gateway.
I fitted an RNS to my 57 plate and have had no battery drain problems.

Either upgrade your canbus or find  modified firmware which prevents battery drain and install that.

Is the firmware a software upgrade?

Yea you download the iso file, burn to dvd and install it.

There is a firmware section in the satnav section of this forum

Yep I'm running a version B on our 2005 GTI with the existing CAN gateway.  Just applied the firmware fix and all is well.

Not sure if it only works on certain firmwares though - think I remember reading that it doesn't on ones beginning 4xxx, and needs older ones but could be talking crap!

I've fitted a pre-coded can gateway from Ed, fitted on Sunday and the issue has disappeared.

Ed's fitting instructions were fantastic and it really didn't take long at all.

I'm a happy chappie  thanks Ed
