My GTi has died!
« on: May 25, 2015, 08:45:25 pm »
Help! Yesterday while driving on the A17 my oil pressure warning message came on so I stopped at a garage and put a litre of oil in (probably too much). Just up the road it came on again then the EPC light and the engine  stopped and wont go again. I came home on the back of a recovery truck.

I cleaned out the oil strainer 18 months ago so I dont think that will be blocked again.

There were no nasty noises whatsoever and the engine ran perfectly until it stopped.

The starter motor just whirrs round now with no sign of starting.

Any ideas?

Is the starter not engaging with the crank at all?

No, I dont think it is. There appears to be no resistance at all but sometimes it seems to catch then just whirrs.

Crankshaft sensor?

Scan it, anyone local to you?  Should be a list on here somewhere...

Why would the crankshaft sensor cause my problems? I don't know anyone local with vcds.

Crank Shaft Sensor failure

Possible Symptoms
* Engine shuts off
* Engine doesn't start

Although EPC light is usually synonymous with the Throttle Body dieing.
I'd definitely try and pull some codes from it before spending any cash though.  Good luck. :happy2:

Thanks Scotty, it's at the local garage now for a diagnosis. They've got an Audi trained mechanic there!!!

No, I'm not on the moon, I'm in Norfolk. Not far from Brandon. There is Eddie-ml about 50 miles away, Teutonic tamer in "swamplyland" and another one cambs and one in Essex. None exactly close but thanks for your input.

Ok, local garage says pressure coming out of inlet so probably camshaft failure and bent valves. They can strip it to make sure but it may be cheaper to change the whole engine or I could sell the car as a non-runner.

Sorry to hear that mate, excuse for CDL?

Was it the Cam Follower that caused the cam failure? When was it changed last?  Think there's an engine in the FS section.

What a pain in the ass :sad1:

I'm assuming that you regularly checked the oil level?
