Brakes on the Beater. Seat Alhambra 98

The beater passed the MOT last week my dad came along for the quickest mot ever less than 10 minutes. He thought it was hilarious.

I was a bit surprised it passed as the brakes have been squealing for a while.

On closer inspection there is no pad left on the rears and they are eating nicely into the discs.

The fronts have a bit of pad left but the discs are very scored.

I don't usually work on the beater as i don't like parking the golf in the street. But it seems silly of me to pay someone to do a job i can do my self.

Just checking to see if any of the carrier bolts need replacing?

Haha, amazing they passed it in such a quick time and with little to no pads.  Cant harm getting some new carrier bolts, they are quite beefy, I'd probably use them again if the heads are in good nick.  As you know they are usually on mega tight, breaker bar for sure...

The discs will probably be stuck on too, so I'd use the leverage of the breaker bar against disc and the carrier before removing the carriers... Blah blah I'm sure you're golden with this job... Where are your cobweb photos btw, lol.

Thanks mate. I did the discs/pads and fluid on the Golf last year so i'm hoping things go as well on the beater. I enjoy working on the golf no seized bolts etc. I neglect the beater so i don't expect her to play nice. I keep meaning to add some pics but i'm embarrassed at how badly i maintain her compared to the golf.

I pulled the wheels off to double check the discs and pads.

The inside rear pad is completely worn out the outside is nearly gone.

The front pads have plenty of meat on. This is how the front discs look. Should i leave the fronts??

The lip is ok will just do the rears. Don't think them discs will come off easy.

As long as the discs are still above the minimum thickness I wouldn't bother replacing them. I'd take them off though and copper slip them now though as it'll make an eventual change a lot easier should you need it in a hurry. Make sure to give it all a damn good and treat her a little bit better, she may reward you efforts. :happy2:

Thanks guys all the discs are within the minimum thickness. So i just replaced the rear pads. Simple job did it out on the road caught a bit of sun also.  :smiley:

The guide pin bolts that came with the ferodo pads were sh*t. I couldn't get them up to 25nm they started to round. Hopefully they are tight enough.

The boots on the guide pins have disintegrated.

I agree, those discs look fine, my GTI ones are worse.. next time I do the discs I'm going to slap on some Hammerite smooth to the bell and edges.  They always end up rusty.

Don't you wash i either ?

After I wash mine the faces of the discs show some surface rust it comes off first time you brake ,I was told the higher the carbon content of the disc metal the quicker they show rust after washing , I once had big reds on a car and they would be tarnished by the time I was washing the forth wheel

The faces get a little manky after washing but so far the edges still have the zinc coating so they still look pretty.

More problems with the beater today.

When hot gear changes are very stiff reverse it near on impossible to select.

If left for 5 mins i can then select reverse.

Just drained out the gear box oil. The oil was thinner than i expected. I don't think this will solve the problem we will see.
