Where to start on performance
« on: May 12, 2015, 03:26:57 pm »
So soon I would like to start on performance in the car. I’m very new to engines so don’t really know what does what, and what is limited by what etc.

If anyone can explain what bits do what and why they are needed I would appreciate it 

Here is what I think I would need to upgrade if I wanted a remap…

Pipercross filter – so this goes in the engine cover where the old air filter is?

Induction kit – This is the huge pipe that starts at the back of the engine and comes round to front with a filter on the front? Is this cold air intake?

Intercooler/ twintercooler?

Spark plugs

Brakes – just front? Pads and discs?

If I’ve missed anything please let me know!

You wouldnt have a pipercross panel filter and an induction kit as its an either one or the other :happy2:

Thought it might have been -  cheers.

I take it the induction kit is the preferred? Is this what makes a car really noisey?

Basic principle is air in, combustion, air out.

Air enters the engine primarily through the air filter. On standard cars the airfilter is a rectangular panel. An induction kit aka inlet, cold air intake etc, increases the surface area of the filter by utilising a cone shape filter. More surface area equals less restriction on the amount of air the engine can suck in.

Exhaust gasses escape through the downpipe, and on a standard car through a small cat, then the main cat, then the rest of the exhaust system up to the twin pipes under the rear bumper. The main restriction on these cars is the downpipe and cats. You can gut the smaller pre cat. Or replace the downpipe with a performance one. And the main cat can be swapped for a performance one. A typical 'cat back' exhaust won't gain you that much power in comparison to downpipe/cat mods.

Spark plugs.. unless yours are faulty stick with oem.

Intercooler.. the oem cooler is fine for 'stage 1' levels of power.

Brakes.. always worth upgrading, even on a standard car. The stock 312s don't take much abuse. Next step up is the 345mm R32/S3 setup. Then there's TTRS etc, and expensive big brake kits.

I'd strongly suggest you avoid any performance mods for now apart from just a stage 1 map. You don't need any of that lot for a stage 1 map to work. You may end up throwing loads of money in the wrong direction.

What you should ensure before a remap though is the following:

Fully working diverter valve. They often split and you won't get full boost if so. Get a revision G vw part.

Cam follower.

PCV.

Again, replace with genuine vw parts.

Fresh oil and service.

Run the car on a high octane fuel. V Power is good.

I wouldn't worry about 0-60 times. A lot of variables come into it. If you think you're not making the power you should a rolling road will highlight potential issues.

R-Tech will do a health check on your car before they map it, for example. And from what I've heard, they'll only map it if it's all working as it should as standard.

I think they also do a remap for the DSG software itself. Which may help you with 0-60 times if that's your bag.

I'm going for a remap myself soon. Probably with R-Tech after hearing so many good things.

Any hardware mods will be limited to pre cat/downpipe/sports cat.

Yes, a cone filter can flow more, but quite a few people report a loss of low down torque in a trade off for more grunt at higher revs. I don't like the sound of that.

The downpipe/cat mods help the turbo spool faster. A good thing.

I wouldn't worry about the 0-60. Get VCDS and run some logs.

I had a full CAI fitted to my K03 for about 3 weeks then sold it on & reverted back to a Piperx panel filter due to the loss of low down torque. it is very noticeable & you feel like you have to rev the car more, almost like more turbo lag. Unless you are going stage 2+ I wouldn't recommend one, the loss of torque makes a slower road car
