Coolant ratio
« on: May 27, 2015, 10:31:33 am »
So around two years ago I did the timing belt and water pump and put fresh vw coolant in once I flushed the system, anyways today I'm going to tackle the main thermostat so il be losing some coolant. Can I just pour my two 1.5L g13 coolant in until it's full and add water after to top up once it's bled? That's if I need to top up with any water anyways. See I'm not sure how much will run out, say it 3L runs out could I pour one g13 bottle in and top with water or pour my two bottles of g13 in? Just a little confused as I will not be flushing the whole system.

Don't use tap water. Too many minerals etc. that'll scale your radiators internals. Get distilled water!

Thanks, il just put it all in then if it needs a top up il add a little water. Surely having to much anti freeze won't hurt?

This was a 5L bottle. Don't know if that makes any difference.

Don't want to give bad info. Surely there will be dilution ration on the bottle.

You'd think I did live their, summer, what's that? It's lashing down and freezing, not far off finished tho and I was expecting the job to be a pain but it's been easy don't know what people are on about     :P

Not much has come out anyways maybes 3 litres I'd say. Going to pour 2 litre of g13 in then top off with water. I've got a anti freeze tester.

The one i bought is already diluted concentration 40%

The main stat is easy if you get the two triple square bolts holding the hard pipes. I found them a little late into the job.

Looked on the bottle and I'm 99% sure it's neat. Anyways in the end I put 3L of g13 in and a little bit of distilled water. Bled it, when for a run got back topped it up a tiny way and now it's done, heaters working etc. engine temp stayed at 90 the whole way even when coasting  :happy2: unlike before.

My anti freeze tester reads -50c , think I should drop a little coolant out and top with water or just leave it, can too much anti freeze cause any damage?

Mine must be neat coolant, your says protection up to -25c I've got double that according to this tester.

Cheers for the help

Mine took nearly the full 5L to fill it. 3 litres and 2 litres water should be fine. I think its supposed to be 1:1. Hopefully someone who knows better will chime in if i'm wrong.

Been in touch with the seller and it's 100% neat as I thought, apparently the diluted version is discontinued.
After looking around on the net it says to use a ratio of 1:1. Il just drop a little out and add water then check with the anti freeze tester, maybes aim for -30c. Just don't want to have too much anti freeze in incase that can cause problems in itself.

Cheers
